They’re in the back half, Eris and him alike. Only a few racers are eating their jetstream, but it’s early yet in the race.[break][break]
Leviathan roars and stays the course, charging forward across open water. His mind is elsewhere, wishing that Slow Dancer could be here instead. Riding a horse across frozen waves would prove an interesting contest. Who would win out, the horse’s endurance or everyone else’s propensity for swimming?[break][break]

He could hear the cheering that erupted from the stands as Pepper popped them back up on the other side of the tunnel, still hot on the heels of the mantine surfer. Only faintly, though - just over the rush of the current in his water logged ears.[break][break]

Shaking his head, he flicked water from his goggles and leaned forward to spur Pepper on as the feraligatr was forced down the rightward path to avoid getting beached on the inlet that rose up out of the ocean.[break][break]

A call from behind him caused Lam to glance back to catch sight of Josh Devlin. "We can't let that happen, Pep- Keep up the pace!" Rather than attempt to call back to the other gym leader, he rose a hand and gave him a cheeky wave before the feraligatr attempted an extra push through the winding path so that when they reconverged, they'd be ahead.[break][break]

Then they could really put some moves into motion!

At the taunting from Josh Devlin, tempest couldn't help but bark out a loud laugh. He honestly hadn't expected it from the other! But it was funny and he took no offense.[break][break]

"Don't worry about him, Marina! We got this!"[break][break]

His voice was loud and carried, a reply to the taunting, but Tempest just grinned and leaned forward to help Marina take the curve. The two of them found their way pushed into a path with the other front runners, half of the pack vanishing down a separate turn.[break][break]

Tempest clicked his tongue, silently pushing his pokemon alone as she barreled down the track to try and keep up.

So far, so good. Leilani hadn't exactly been expecting to get to the front right out of the gate, but with a little elbow grease and a lot of luck, maybe she wouldn't be stuck dead last. Her Blastoise coasted by in the middle of the pack, with the competitors busy swirling all around. The lot of them had been forced down a path with the last turn and split the group evenly.

She looked around the her side, a lively bunch. Could Mahina see her? Or was she busy staring at her phone and fanboying over Josh? Another sharp turn in the middle of this fork was coming up while she prepared herself to go around.

HOW'S YOUR ZIPPER MERGE?

IT WAS OBVIOUS WHICH PATH WAS FASTER: one was straight, the other curving back and forth. Though all tried to swim for the straight channel, the rip currents had their own say in the matter, separating the field in two. The wakes of those in the front of the field blocked the current just enough for those in the back to swim into the fast lane. Pokémon there turned up the heat as much as they could within the rules, Leilani Kalawai'a 's BLASTOISE bouncing along the water's surface to minimize exposure to the current as much as possible.[break][break]

SOME WERE ADAMANT TO GET INTO THE FAST LANE, and paid the price: no matter how hard Eva Morales and Thomas Benoit turned their BARRASKEWDA and BASCULEGION, the ichthyds could could not overpower the current. A loud crash boomed around the field, every single racer able to hear the sound of the Peacemaker slamming into the islet's bank hard. Its propeller-tail hummed loudly as it dislodged itself, but not without witnessing the ghost-type recover first and swim past. Even Ambassador Elise Calcifet got caught up in the pile-up, her DRAGONAIR's tail wrapped around the Galarian fish for a moment before they went their separate ways. Genevieve Cromwell 's VAPOREON and Navy 's KINGDRA seemed so distant as they traded places with one another, but it was still early. Once Aqua Jets, Liquidations, and the like were legal to use, the complexion of the entire contest would change.[break][break]

THE COMPETITION ON THE STRAIGHTAWAY WAS FIERCE. Now that they did not have to worry about the surf produced by kyle lopez 's WAILORD, Raju Mystic and CIAN MAHER had a proper, competitive duel all the way down the straightaway. The Orthrus member pushed his GOLISOPOD to full speed, getting oh-so-close to overtaking the FROAKIE. The Gym Leader's near-perfect bond and SYGNA SUIT proved a real challenge for him to overcome, seemingly one small step ahead. Eris Halla and robin coello had front-row seats to that spectacle, though they could not be distracted for long. The Ranger's CARRACOSTA powered through the current, keeping pace with the WOOPER just in front of her.[break][break]

THERE WOULD BE LITTLE TIME for conversation between Navy and Eris Halla , the whims of the waves -- and those of kyle lopez 's surging WAILORD -- pushing them separate directions. With the skill of a Top Champion, the giant Pokémon floated around each curve with sublime precision, whizzing past the pair of SHARPEDO piloted by Josh Devlin and Tempest Quinn . They were making a move for the leaders, Jack Napier and lam logan ; a three-way battle among the WAILORD, FERALIGATR, and MANTINE felt imminent.[break][break]

Gwyar Wledig WAS NOT HAVING IT. Exposing his TERA ORB to the salty air, everyone on the left side of the course would feel like a cloud blocked out the sun from the brilliance of the AEGISLASH's transformation. Crystalline blades extended from the TERASTALLIZED steel-type, cutting through the water like it was merely air. Though he gained no position, he made up an enormous amount of distance, Josh Devlin able to feel the sword's wake as the knight threatened to pass him.[break][break]

AT THE END OF THE FORK, the groups merged, those behind Gwyar Wledig needing to adjust their vision quickly from how bright the TERASTALLIZED Pokémon was. Depending on how well-trained the teams were, the extra light might make judging the next series of corners difficult!

Prompt: After whizzing past Pacifidlog proper, the course's most contorting turns loomed ahead. Built around a small reef that was exposed to the sun when the tide was out, Pokémon would need to swim around it. First, a sweeping left that would require teams to fight a cross-current as they rounded it. Second, an even tighter right that whipped them back the other direction if they wanted to take the turn at speed! Furthermore, the reefs made the final curve's exit narrow! Prudent water braking would be needed for almost anyone in the field to avoid a rough kiss with the wild Corsola observing in awe![break][break]

all plans to go for mediocrity has fallen. kyle takes up a different angle for his take of this race if his wailord wasn't willing to be complacent.

normally, something like a wailord wouldn't be able to maneuver around things. they grew up used to their bulky sizes, but kyle has apparently nabbed one that differs from the rest.

"we'll take lead, m'kay?"

it shows promise for whenever it rides against the waves of the race, and the twists and turns of the course was just another layer to add for the champion's test drive of his pokemon.

it doesn't care for collateral. the wailord brakes and accelerates with each required turn, creating waves while its trainer hangs on.

Despite it being a competition, and Raju trying to give a good showing, there was a thing as sportsmanship. So when CIAN MAHER waved at him, Raju waved back in a friendly way. Grudges during competitions like this was so stupid. If Cian manages to beat him, then so be it. Still, he was going to try his best, and try to overtake the sygna suit wearing man and his Froakie. The next group of obstacles looked like they were going to be requiring sharp turning. Samurai and him were going to go full speed! With their reaction time and speed, this should be a piece of cake. But the ocean could also be cruel with her currents...

He was still leaning into the wind, however he could hear the uproar happening some distance behind him—it looked like someone had used their ace in the hole already!

So soon?! he thought; however he would not risk stopping, not even for just a second, to check out what was happening—the loud noise from the crowd was indication enough that something did happen, so there was that.

The little town floating swept past them in a blur; and all he could focus on was the waters ahead of him! The Mantine wiggled her flappy fins; a sign that there was an obstacle coming up—he could feel the lurching direction shifting beneath the Mantine’s belly!

“Ri, don’t panic!” he would hiss quietly as he leaned lower into the wind; the better to keep the slipstream up and ahead.

“I know you can make those tight turns! I believe in you.”

Onward the two would go!

Though Lam definitely didn’t intend on letting him keep the lead, just ‘cause it was fun to watch![break][break]

“Watch out for all these little guys!” he instructs as he leans forward to tuck himself close to Pepper’s—making himself as compact as possible as she eases into the first of several tight turns. When she tilts, he leans with her to avoid resistance against the push and pull of the current.[break][break]

The scene unfolded before her confirmed her strategy. She didn't wanna fight with anyone for a good spot. At least, not until the end. She was surprised the other challengers were so prepared with competitive pokemon like Goliospod and with tech like Sygna Suits. Thankfully, Robin was facing any of those... Just the ocean.

Carracosta braved the current, but there was so much race ahead of them. "Keep powering on," she praised Carracosta. "We're doing great."

It probably didn’t matter much that the Dragonair had tried so much to help with their last placing. Her tail wraps around the Galarian fish Pokemon and the Barraskewda being a little too fast for the dragon type Pokemon would have the Dragonair let go of the speedy fish. With the other racers now being ahead of the diplomat, she and her Dragonair will have to catch up with the rest of the other competitors.[break][break]

Bavsargra makes use of using her reaction time and speed to get through the contorting turns after they pass through Pacifidlog. The small reef around the turns would make for a harder time if they wanted to keep up with the faster aquatic Pokemon and their riders. Flicking the reins onto her Dragonair, the ambassador would make doubly sure not to run into the reef as her Dragonair makes the turn around the reef. [break][break]

The Top Champion's Wailord, despite being lighter than water, pushed Josh and Snacker about due to the sheer size of its wake. Contact seemed inevitable, and it was an exchange Hoenn's largest Pokémon species would almost certainly win. The MINIMIZED Pokémon's body would hit even harder than it otherwise would, forcing him to yield to kyle lopez by swimming as close to the outside of the turns as he could. The duo completely submerged for a few moments until the sea titan was past them.

Holding a close fourth place, he had a challenger, though; Gwyar Wledig 's Teeastallized Aegislash was using the transformation to become faster and more aerodynamically efficient. The race-legal burst of speed, combined with the contorting turns leading to the home stretch, was trouble for the Sharpedo. He had worked on the shark's turning specifically for this race, having sacrificed some speed to get there, but would it be enough?

Seeing the dead-man's-curves coming, Josh pulled back on Snacker's fin, the dark-type bouncing along the surface at a high angle to put on the brakes before leaning into the final challenges the course had to offer. He kept both hands steady on the Sharpedo's exposed fin, getting a feel for what the water conditions near the reef would be like today. He took it slower this lap to get his angle down for the next two laps, where he would have the opportunity to take them faster than his competition!

Ahead of him, Josh Devlin, the master of faster. Behind... uh. A beautiful young woman whom he was not acquainted with.

Well... crud.

They hadn't quite blasted past the competition like a missile as he had hoped, but hey— they hadn't lost their place despite the changing status quo, so they at least had that going for them.

Not nearly enough for Gwyar, however.

Now really wasn't the time to try and take over those ahead of him, though... contorting turns, cross-currents, a narrow exit... the next bit was all about maneuvering, with speed as an optional.

It was playing to Galatine's strengths. But given their increased speed, it was up in the air whether she would be able to show case those talents in their current circumstances.

"Come on, girl. Show them all what you're made of!" The knight shouted with a smile, gripping firmly unto the axe-sail, tugging and using his weight in an attempt to assist Galatine in taking the narrow turns more sharply.
