AS NIGHT FALLS UPON OLDALE TOWN, the citizens of this humble locale begin to prepare for THE SPIRIT FESTIVAL. Paper lanterns are constructed with the help of Pokemon, inscribed with beautiful Octillery inks detailing the wishes of their creators or buyers. In the sky, many Drifblim and Drifloon congregate. Perhaps, if you are so lucky, a well-aimed pokeball will allow you to capture one as the town begins to glow with the festivities of the evening.[break][break]

only one character of yours may participate.
in order to qualify for the capture, you must ROLL using the ROLL COMMAND. after, INCLUDE A REFERENCE TO PAPER LANTERNS somewhere in your post. you may use an image, gif, use an analogy, figurative language, etc.
the highest roll will earn a shiny drifblim; the second highest roll will earn a normal drifblim, and the lowest roll will net a drifloon. the gender of the pokemon can be decided by the recipient.
the attempted capture will not consume a pokéball.
everyone who participates will also receive 1X SPARKLING DUST.
the drifblim/drifloon have movesets that will be revealed at the end of the event.
this is a time-limited event and will end february 20th, 12am pst.

Stormy's paper lantern is far from beautiful. It's creased, folded one too many times and probably even crushed at some point. It's misshapen appearance gives it character, she hopes, as does the wish she's written messily against the surface. [break][break]

"Oh shit.. I misspelled."[break][break]

The woman groans, but there is ultimately nothing to be done. She didn't have the patience to redo it, and if she hesitated any longer her lantern would be the only one in the night sky. That was the sort of singling out that she most certainly did not want.[break][break]

With a snap of her fingers, she ignites the lantern and lifts it gently into the sky. As she does so, she notes the swarm of Drifblim and Drifloon rising into the night sky alongside the hundreds of paper wishes. The soft glow of the flames highlight the deep purples of the ghost-type Pokemon, and Stormy furrows her brow.[break][break]

Business was booming. Thankfully this time Noelani had made sure to hire some interns to do the dirty work so besides some overseeing and joining in for one or two to make himself look part of the team he had left the creation of paper lanterns to them. They had a stock of those ready but for the most part the income Odd Job Workers was getting from this stand was not the sale of lanterns but the inscription of choice with Octillery ink upon a lantern.

Octy his Octillery had been a god send in that regard and having her stand around the shop served as incentive that they in fact were using traditional Octillery ink. Smiling politely at leaving customer Noelani turned to his sla…grun… interns “Alight guys take five after that we’ll go and release our lanterns.”

He got cheers in response to that but what they didn’t know was that they would be releasing their lanterns on the roof of the next building over so they could return faster and not actually ending for the day. Their faces were priceless as he told them that while the stood there and watched the bright night sky. Due to that he was able to spot a Drifloon floating lower due to the number of lanterns and deciding there was nothing to lose he threw a pokeball in the direction of the ghost-type to try and catch it.

The swarm, just in time for the spirit festival, came floating in from one way to the other. The slow flow of these baloon-like pokemon are more akin to paper lanterns than baloons themselves. Speaking of, Jak was there to set up a paper lantern of his own, albeit put on a pause for him to go and try his luck with catching one off of the swarm.

Drifblims remind Valerio of his tenure in Kanto. Even after the invasion, paper lanterns have been a persistent tradition in the Kantonian soil that tells of dreams, hopes, and prayers of the people in a Rocket-dominated region. He doesn't understand what its purpose is not until his stay in Johto, where the tradition is also observed, but where it is held the most significant. Not until he lights himself one and let it float into the sky.

The redhead walks into the usually quiet town of Oldale, waiting for the festival to start as his eyes wander with the flying drifblims.

News of a swarm of drifblim and driftloon in Olde Town spread like wildfire. It was music to her ears. Supposedly, it was in the name of something called the Spirit Festival. Paper lanterns were to be let loose in the sky at night while these ghost and flying balloons themselves floated with them. Genesis loved her ghost types so she was quick to join the festivities.

Her green orbs observed as the little floating balloons lifted into the sky with aid from the little candle. In the corner of her eye, she spotted the little purple creatures coming into view. Genesis moved quick, darting in an attempt to get closer. Sudden, a golden one appeared. Her eyes widen, reaching into her pockets. “Please hit the mark,” he whispered, kissing the ball before giving it a toss.

The festival was already promising to be a good one and it wasn't even started yet. Chu-e had come into town for something else, he was meeting with someone later and wanted to prepare, but with time to kill he couldn't resist helping with some of the lanterns. This crafty kind of stuff was what Chu-e enjoyed, even if his finished products weren't as pretty as he wanted.

It seemed a swarm of some purple pokemon had descended into the area. Chu-e really wasn't interested. But, he still pulled out a pokeball and chucked along with the other trainers who seemed to be doing just that. He wasn't really aiming, mostly just doing it to do it. If he missed, he would be perfectly fine.

It was half curiosity that brought him to Oldale to this part of the Spirit Festival. The sight and spectacle of the 'Drifs' gathering afloat the skies lived up to the notion of it.

The other half that wasn't curiosity was nostalgia. On the fated day he met Cait it was the Self-Destruct of a poor-sport of a Drifblem that brought them together.

No matter the rocky road they walked due to the state of affairs of the region he was proud and joyous to have her in his love. He'd traded off the troublesome blimp as soon as he could but recognizing the symbolic importance of the species in the context of his relationship he waited for a chance to claim one of his own.

It’s interesting how traditions and customs collide, twisting into different shapes but retaining their base purpose at the core – their spirit. [break][break]

A wish of his own had been made on the eve of a new year, launched into the sky not too unlike how the paper lanterns were released tonight, dreams sailing out of reach and left to the winds good graces. That doesn’t’ stop Angelo from sitting cross legged in the grass however, his own paper folded into a balloon shape that would soon join the others. His, however, doesn’t have a wish attached. It’d be the same as the one he’d sent off on the wings of a paper Latios airplane, anyway. [break][break]

“Oh, crap,” he grimaces through an amused smile as he releases his lantern, hastily made and set free at an inopportune time, floating up right into a Drifblim’s path. There's a blank piece of paper in front of her, laying innocently on dew ladden grass, slowly growing damp from the surrounding moisture. Skyler makes no move to even attempt to touch it, a silvery gaze following the curves of silent trees and settling on the bloated shape of a nearby Drifblim with a barely perceptible shudder.

If this moment ought to have been one of reflection on past decisions and future wishes, it completely goes over Skyler's head. Much like the dozens of ghost types that float carelessly in the passing breezes, disappearing into the quickly darkening sky. Hopefully away from her.

Inaction, however, had never been one of Captain Dross' strong suits. She rolls her shoulders back and peers over her them, paranoid, to make sure none of the balloons creep close. Her pen briefly scribbles something into the piece of paper - a new years joke she'd shared with Razz Kingsman during a well-earned ~~lunch~~ breakfast.

Her papern lantern drifts away slowly at first, then gains speed as it collides with a couple of confused Drifloon and Drifblim, much to Skyler's victorious grin. "Hah! Take 'em down!"

If she's aware of the odd looks thrown her away then, the captain doesn't seem to care in the slightest.

Paper lanterns littered the sky like an aerial garbage spill, slapping and bouncing off the front and sides of her Drifblim. It was like driving a car through a swarm of insects. “Honestly...” Chryssa said from her pool chair the Driftblim was carrying. She lifted up her hands to swat away one of the ink-inscribed lanterns as it rose up in her face like an illuminated jellyfish. On reflex she caught it, reading the prayer silently. With a little more respect, she released the lantern again and let it resume its track skywards.

Hers was not the only Drifblim drawn to the spectacle— many others had congregated in the skies, and whatever force had summoned them seemed to mesmerize Beagan, who drifted closer to her kin.

Am I about to get caught up in some kind of ritual?

At least she had a comfortable seat.

There were very few traditions that Eva despised: floating lanterns was one of them. The doctor didn’t hate a lot of things, that wasn’t in her nature. But releasing non-biodegradable flaming floats into the sky?! Ridiculous. Talk about a forest fire waiting to happen! Not to mention the pokemon that mistake the fallen lanterns for food! They didn’t just disappear once they were out of sight.

Eva watched the assembly of the lanterns with an obvious distaste. But the doctor pursed her lips, not speaking up about her concerns in fear of misrepresenting the League. Instead she chose to separate herself from this particular part of the festivities. Her walk brought her to the edge of the festival ground where a lone Drifblim sat isolated from the others. Eva’s brows furrowed and carefully approached. Something about it didn’t seem right. Perhaps it was injured?

Eva took an empty pokeball from her pocket and tossed it at the lone pokemon.

These Drifblim float alongside their paper lanterns in a celebration of the new year. This is a time to be thankful and wish for the aspiration's of tomorrow. Yet, there are those who seek opportunity among the docile.

Fernando is no different.

As long as they exist to be captured, to be used, he will be right alongside them. An empty Pokeball sits in his palm. A lofty, well practiced tossed sees to it knocking against a spare Pokemon, looking to make it his own.

After talking Andy Blackadder off the ledge, Remiel remained in the air above the festival (atop his Dragapult) for a moment longer. It was quite the view, after all. Unfortunately, his appreciation of it was soon marred by hundreds of Drifblim appearing out from shadowy portals (PHANTOM FORCE) to drift amongst the festival lanterns.[break][break]

Mephisto croaked as he swiftly weaved between them all. Swimming against an ever increasing wave of balloons, however, the pair realized that they would soon be overwhelmed if they didn't escape. "Make us a portal! Now!" Remiel urged, reaching for an empty ball clipped to his belt when he realized they were on a crash course with one of the aforementioned balloons.[break][break]

Casting the ball, the royal opened it would clear open a path for his Dragapult to safely form a portal and help them escape. He was prepared to snatch the ball from mid-air just before their departure, too.[break]
