THE ANSWERS AWAIT



FERNANDO BREATHES A SIGH OF RELIEF when his prediction proves incorrect. the worst case scenario is averted. instead, they face a riddle that, at first glance, makes little sense.

“unown,” he repeats, tucking away the observation reports.

a good observation and probably integral to the backdrop of where they are. it fits with the riddle maker’s explanation. it ties back to the DRK TRIAD.

the unown are the source. the medium.

“hm.”

his gyarados is returned. substituted by a porygon-z.

“keep an eye out for us,” he orders. the pokemon promptly LOCKS-ON to the console to catch any changes. perhaps when an answer is chosen the data is rerouted somewhere. a way to alert the system as a whole.

’ question interrupts his line of thinking. they sparsely have the chance to debate before others start locking in their answers.

“the bottom two pokemon have yet to be discovered in hoenn. at least, not publicly.”

the rest have appeared in some shape or form. the EXCURSION REPORTS, his own trip down HOENN’S HISTORIA, and even the recent DARKEST DAY report one of these pokemon in some shape or form. it’s not a fact may know but he confirms the suspicions has sprouted.

“but the riddle asks for a single choice.”

his hand hovers over GIRATINA for the longest time. comes to mind. not this world’s but the other one. his alternative’s wife.

“regardless of the answer, we choose as one. right or wrong, we face whatever comes as one.”

a vivid nightmare comes to mind. on halloween, several years ago, he was faced with a choice. pick one of three elevators. the correct answer had been to pick the same elevator as everyone else.

so this time he does so, all the well knowing that DARKRAI is the right answer. it’s the only pokemon to openly oppose the league. it’s the only pokemon willing to desicrate their land.

it’s the only pokemon that deserves to be eliminated.

Alex continues to hold onto him, even though Memo is no longer fighting. His rational brain has, shakily, taken the reigns agan, so he goes willingly, wrapping his own arm around Alex’s waist so they’re more-or-less leaning on each other, making it easier to move. He doesn’t want Alex getting hurt because he was having a mental breakdown.

He offers a shaky and apologetic smile by means of introduction to ; what a way to first meet someone.

Data swarms and swirls around them-- almost like snowflakes, but far too organized to be anything suggesting organic. Memo’s head is starting to hurt and he doesn’t know if that’s from the adrenaline slowly leaving his system or from their weird, datascape surroundings. He winces into the light as the second scan passes beneath them and the mechanized voice calls out as such.

“I’m fine, now, Alex,” Memo insists, not trying to pull away, but also still worried that he’ll make Alex a target. He catches a sight-- a figment, really, probably his imagination-- of himself in the glass, but it moves just a little differently, right when he goes left, exhales as he inhales, just a blink of irregularity. Then it’s gone and it’s just him again.

Up ahead, the path again cul-de-sacs against the swirling off-blue void of whatever this world was made of. Memo feels like he’s in a sci-fi movie, or video game, on the bridge of some fancy spaceship.

“I’m getting real tired of domes,” he hisses, echoing Alex’s terse exhalation, as another encapsulates them. And riddles, too, but he expected more of those before they can get out; he squints again, against the headache pounding in his skull, staring at the images of the Legendaries spread out across the screen in front of them.

Alex goes off on his outburst and Memo can’t help it-- he laughs. It's an endearing noise filled with light, juxtaposed against their rather dire situation.

“That was-- very Unovan of you,” he says, grinning up at Alex as the taller man angrily makes his answer selection.

“I also think it’s Darkrai,” he says, after a beat. “All the other ones are actually legendaries. This is the Legendary path, so Darkrai is the odd man out.”

He reaches out and taps Darkrai, sealing in his answer, and his fate.

The clone is dispatched, but why does he get the feeling its still there, watching him. Cause it is. Cause that blue glitchy twink is in the reflections of everything staring up at him. He looked down to his phone, tempting fate. "Stop staring you bitchy knockoff." he taunted before facing the camera forward again to continue recording, as he saw no signs of the phone malfunctioning. He gave a breezy 'thanks!' to for the healing before looking back at his reflection. [break][break]

He doesn't like the creepy smile and he hoped some verbal abuse would make it flinch or glare. The riddle cropped up and Mint tapped his chin. As he glanced over at @gywar mentioning forgetting something be looked back at the dogs. "Pretty sure those last two dog things don't actually exist." he chimed in his hand moving to pick both weirdo dogs before he realized everyone else was picking Darkrai. "Oh...oops." [break][break]

"Well no harm if its majority rules right? But if it just needs one person to answer correctly, diversifying the portfolio should be fine." he said before looking back at his own reflection in his phone and grinning. "Enjoying the view you little shit?"

Mimicking Wooloo set loose, everyone scatters. Clumping together in groups of the weird and wonderful, familiar and unexpected.

Free from the indiscriminate lasers of the Porygon and the strange copies, Hoenn's most misfortunate postman is released after having his path decided by a pain in the ass pilot and a scrappy sailor.

Hope doesn't mind being in a group with a renowned criminal, Mr POG Bank and half the Elite Four.

“Y'sure know how to pick them,” he comments to , intentionally bumping her shoulder with his as they move towards the next riddle. If the small smirk on his lips is any indication, it's that he isn't concerned - this group will at least be interesting.

Until he notices the pointed focus in 's expression.

Angelo curiously traces the line that cuts from the notorious Rocket Underboss through the crowd, following it like a direction arrow across a map subtly from the corner of his gaze.

▇▇▇▇ doesn't seem to notice the look shot his way.

Instantly the suspicious, concerned hardening within Angelo's chest crumbles like a wave eating away at the cliff edge. Recognition only resulting in static crackling between his ears.

Footsteps stilling, gaze distant, Angelo slides his hands into his pockets as if in thought about the riddle that everyone chatters about like a hive of Beedrill. 

Within his brain, threads of memories are hurriedly pulled, only to find their ends severed in his grasp.

Angelo wets his lips, rolls his shoulder with a crack and tells himself the dimension hop must've hit him harder than he initially thought.

“Guess Reshiram must be a fire type then, by process of elimination.” Stepping up towards the riddle, Angelo casually lies through his teeth. Hiding both his knowledge of the legendary dragon and the confusion of loss over a dear friend's name both. “If it goes wrong, we'll blame and his Unown friends.”

She directs the Araquanid closer, tilting her head and peering at the other man with more than a little confusion before bowing her head. Even in here, politeness was important. "G-greetings..." Her usual burst of bravery hit her heart, and she firmly sat up, "Stay close to me, we'll protect you."

Kaida had seen the gods of Pokemon, even fought one or two, but she had no way to know their classifications. All she knew was that this Darkrai sent a chill down her spine, and took her back to the day Sootopolis City was taken by Rocket. She shuddered and pressed the Darkrai.

After making his choice Razz just sticks to the sidelines, sticking closer to those he knew like and , though at the same time trying to keep some distance from . While he knows both ' and 's alliances, he still wants to think there is some hope there. [break][break]

Though he does look toward when he mentions something wrong, brows narrow at the idea as the Ranger ponders about it, thinks back to the pokemon that were 'Deleted' then to when they were scanned. "So having come here we've been digitized making the swirl haired man able to do something with manipulating our data, I think for the moment if we're watching each other's back hopefully things will be fine?"[break][break]

Whether or not everyone here could trust each other to watch each other's back was a different story. Though he does look toward Angelo with some confusion with the way he calls out . "Why blame him?" he questions curiously as he ponders for a moment if Angelo knows something about the man the rest don't.

'second scan complete' echoes in the room but Melody doesn't really understand what it means. [break][break]

" Hey Ro-!" she tries to say before suddenly something peculiar happens, she...she can't recall his name? She pauses for a moment, becoming annoyed. How could she possibly forget her best friend's name? Was it her condition forcing her to forget? But it couldn't be, she wasn't that stressed was she? Melody looked at him confused. "Hey...uh...what was your name again..?" she asked him. [break][break]

"Uh-...hey..I know I forgot your name..but i think..im forgetting things more than I should.." she tells him, not recalling if he knew about her condition already. Her spirit is really affected by this, melody's head began to hurt more and more. "My head hurts.."

They continued to the terminal and they are presented with another puzzle, a pairing of pokemon.. "Fire flying..ground steel.. steel flying.." first line. Why did that groudon picture make her so upset when she looked at it? "Is...is the answer for this puzzle to be the typing they share?" she asks as Callan began to deduce the answer was reshiram. "Are you sure? she says as she switches out her lapras for phione as the little baby pokemon often comforted her...she thinks, was she misremembering again? [break][break]

"Alright, if you guys say so." she says as she tries to tap reshiram on the screen but suddenly Phione starts to have a hissy fit in melody's grasp and Melody accidentally clicks on YVETAL. "Phione! What the fuck?!" she said as phione was trying to tell her she forgot some moves.

[attr="class","postbody"] sneakers skidding against the pavement, they run as fast as they can towards the second terminal. somewhere, somehow, a voice echoes. second scan complete. somewhere later jayden will think about what that means — perhaps too late.

[break][break] as they all gather in the middle of the cul-de-sac, pixelated blocks form in front of them and a terminal opens up to reveal the vision of several pokemon in front of them. there are a few legendaries that jayden immediately recognizes — raikou, palkia, darkrai — being a few of them but then two canine-looking pokemon at the bottom. they look mythical and somehow familiar, yet completely new.

[break][break] he turns to speak to the person next to him, someone cute and pink-haired, as she speaks to someone named . it takes him a moment, brain fuddled, to realize that it's and the league scientist speaking through the brainfog. his fingers release on their grip on the former, running a hand through his hair. he swallows — is this feeling real, or imagined?

[break][break] everyone seems to choose DARKRAI — even . in fact, the corporate giant declares that they all must choose the same. jayden's gaze instinctively towards to the red-haired man who called him brother. 'who...?' letting the rest of them make their choices, jayden finger's tap DARKRAI just as he notices the teal-haired boy next to him.

[break][break] it's only after calls his name that jayden remembers. "mint, you —" a pause. "you didn't."

As the marks began to fade from 's neck, a modicum of relief assuaged some of Barnaby's growing concern.

"Yeah, I'm alright." For now. Who knew what kind of crazy shit was laying in wait in this digital hellscape? The clones were likely just the beginning.

Around them the scenery began to change once more, PORYGON giving way to yet another domed cul-de-sac and terminals for their group to interact with. Glancing at the faces gathered, Barnaby recognized about half of them, although not everyone would recognize him as BEE.

A mental note was taken when he noticed 's pointed stare, although he couldn't quite place the recipient .

Another stranger, , mentioned Mars by name. Curious, Barnaby eavesdropped on their conversation and even went so far as to audibly chuckle when the man mentioned 's alleged allergy and distaste for canines.

One of those was true, of course, but it was absurd enough to be humorous given their current setting.

By this point most of their group had completed the assigned task: picking a Pokémon from their terminal. Everyone around him had chosen RESHIRAM - well, save , although that didn't seem entirely intentional. So, Barnaby did the same, thinking that 's logic made as much sense as anyone else's.

In the background he heard 's comments about losing her memory and possibly being replaced by the clones. The notion sent a shiver down Barnaby's spine, but he decided it best to be silent for now.

There are dozens of concerning theories floating around in his head, much of it aligning with ’ own concerns about replicas being built with their data. However, he does not voice any of them, perhaps out of a desire not to scare the little girl more than what she already is or perhaps because voicing those things would make them seem too real at this moment. Panicking won’t do them any good and he knows it. They need to get out of here, survive this trap, and find out whatever they can find out while at it.

So, he focuses on their surroundings. On ’s confirmation that he’s doing okay, on the cul-de-sac, the dome, the riddle, and yes, even ’s comment about him not being trustworthy…

“Are you putting me on?” Rowan asked , eyebrow raised. Was she messing around or had something happened to her due to this ‘second scan’ phenomenon? A quick glance about his surroundings found Rowan could recall the names of the faces he saw in the crowd that he recognized, but would he know if he’d forgotten one of them? Amber eyes lingered on for a moment, one of the few people outside of Rocket who was aware of his affiliations. “It’s Rowan, you airhead.” He turned back to Melody finally with a sigh, giving her a playful nudge. “Come on Grandma, I’ll help you to the buttons.” Rowan teased, leading them both to the console.

Attention was now turned to the riddle before them, as cryptic as he’d expect of such a place. There were a few patterns to be found among the team that was missing a Pokémon, and while seemed to have a reasonable explanation, there were too many variables. “While Krookodile and Hydreigon are both dark types, Krookodile also shares Ground type with Steelix, which means Charizard could be paired with Corviknight for Flying type. In that case the missing matching typing would then be…” Rowan reached out and pressed YVELTAL, offering a small shrug. “...Dark.”

One of them would have the correct answer, and assuming they would progress as a group, it behooved them to have varying selections. Not to mention, Yveltal reminded him of , who Rowan wished was here alongside him.

okay. okay. aries allows herself a sigh of relief, because syl, from where aries can see, is perfectly fine and heading back. and, to the same extent, looks like he’s safe enough for them to continue on the path to terminal two. in the chaos, they barely note the robotic voice, despite something in the back of their mind warning them that maybe they should. but they don’t, because they’re waiting for mint and—[break][break]

aries furrows her brows. she knows, in theory, who she’s waiting for; she knows that she doesn’t particularly like them, and that she had hoped they wouldn’t meet again, but their name is lost to her. this time, they make a note to ask her name, if only to thank them better– if aries doesn’t remember it, then surely it’s never come up before now. given what she does remember, anyways, it sounds more likely to anything else. it’s only then that she realized — has followed her to terminal two, and she gives them a strange look.[break][break]

she had thought they would pick another terminal instead of following a near-stranger, but she supposed she had thought wrong.[break][break]

regardless, she doesn’t give much more thought to it, attention drawn to the screens instead. which one does not belong… immediately, her attention goes to the two at the bottom of the screen, and she hesitates. the riddle just says one– despite the simple reasoning, it’s enough to give her pause. everyone else seems to be choosing darkrai, from what she can tell. well, except , but she doesn’t respect him so he doesn’t count in her mind.[break][break]

aries pauses, just for a second longer, and then chooses darkrai. if they’re wrong, they’re all going down together, she supposes.[break][break]
