Considering how the first and last time one his Pokémon mega-evolved went, it took a decent amount of convincing from the event organizers for Locke to carry on with the third round. Even after being reassured multiple times over that no Pokémon would be harmed by the transformation, he still opted to borrow one from the random selection being provided backstage.

A Misty Terrain rolled out like fog down the runway as Locke emerged arm in arm with a Gardevoir. The courier was now dressed in a simple, white, chiffon beach dress and a wide-brimmed, straw sun hat-both of which their companion seemed to be wearing with far more confidence.

Upon reaching the end of the catwalk, Locke turned slightly away from the crowd, shyly tipping the hat over their face to reveal the Mega Stone affixed to the pink ribbon like a jewel. Both the stone and psychic type instantly began to glow in response to their sudden bought of nerves, until the light broke into shimmering pink particles around the newly-transformed Gardevoir.

Even though Marshall has his own Pokémon that can Mega Evolve, he opts for a rental for this third round of the swimsuit contest. To match his choice of partner, he changes once more, shedding his white shirt and lavender trunks for the complete opposite palette.[break][break]

Marshall struts out onto the catwalk in plain, black swim shorts that hug his hips and the tops of his thighs, accentuating his assets. Over his torso, he wears an open shirt, the loose fabric fluttering loosely around him as he walks. The shirt is pale blue, its bottom half printed with white-and-blue flames rising up along the cloth. On his face, Marshall wears black aviator sunglasses and a shit-eating grin. A Mega Stone shines, embedded into the leather cuff bracelet he wears around his right wrist.[break][break]

But no Pokémon comes out with him. Instead, he holds a black Pokéball in his hand as he walks the length of the runway, tossing it high into the air when he reaches the end. As the Charizard emerges in a flash of light, it continues in an upward trajectory, flapping its great wings for speed and lift.[break][break]

At the same time, Marshall strikes a pose inspired by TV shows he watched from his childhood. As he does, he slaps the Mega Stone on his wrist, activating it. Then, as the Pokéball comes hurtling back down, he catches it smoothly, not breaking his pose.[break][break]

The Charizard transforms, its orange scales darkening to black, its wings changing shape, the yellow flame brightening to a pure white licked with blue. Uttering a tremendous roar, it flares its wings before beginning its careful, controlled descent. Arcing its neck to the left and right, the Mega Charizard X breathes plumes of white-blue fire.[break][break]

When the Pokémon lands behind him, Marshall eases out of his pose, lowering his aviators with his free hand and winking to the crowd. He recalls Mega Charizard X into the rental Pokéball and turns to swagger back down the runway.[break][break]

[attr="class","monbody"]This is going to look ridiculous, thought Aurelie, rubbing her forehead as she contemplated what she was planning to do next for the swimsuit contest. But at the same time, this is all I can think of. And maybe there's some merit in being quirky?

Though she was far from an expert, Aurelie had studied basic swordsmanship and fencing for years, as part of her lifelong fascination not only with crafting blades but also with using them to full advantage. She wouldn't count on her skills to win a life-or-death fight, but she knew she could at least put on a good show. Thus, for this strut down the runway, the red-haired smith wore a simple silver two-piece swimsuit that hopefully evoked the look of armor, while carrying a wooden practice sword in her other hand. A borrowed bracelet set with a Galladite stone glinted on her wrist.

At her side paced an equally borrowed Gallade, looking fittingly gallant and as protective as any bodyguard. The sunlight overhead glinted off the teal crest atop his head, which always reminded her a little of a gladiator's helmet, or perhaps a medieval knight's. At the end of the runway, they both stopped and bowed to each other solemnly, the Gallade performing the maneuver with courtly elegance, Aurelie looking noticeably self-conscious but with a small smirk playing across her lips.

Then she drew her sword from its sheath in one smooth motion, raising her other arm—the one wearing the bracelet—high in a warding gesture to protect her head. "En garde!" she called out in a high, carrying voice. At that moment, radiant light shot out from the stone on her bracelet, bathing the Pokemon across from her in a luminous glow.

And the Gallade transformed. Its entire body turned brilliant white, reflecting the sunlight with a near-blinding glare, and the spikes on its head extended and lengthened into long, sweeping cape-like protrusions that billowed heroically in the ocean breeze. Most awe-inspiring of all—at least to Aurelie—its arms simultaneously reshaped themselves into a pair of twin blades that it waved about skillfully in a dual-wielding style that looked both daunting and dazzling. Aurelie couldn't help but grin in excitement as she brandished her own sword against the now-Mega Gallade.

All three blades flowed into motion as they began their sword-fighting performance, proceeding back down the runway like two duelists engaged in fierce battle. Their swords flickered and clashed against each other in intricate, impressive-looking patterns, flowing from feint and attack to parry and counterattack with the seeming ease of long practice and much drilling. Forgetting to be self-conscious, forgetting everything but the pleasure of this spar against the Mega Gallade, she whirled and dodged its expert blows, while her attacks were deflected gracefully and effortlessly by the Pokemon with movements as smooth as silk.

Perhaps sword-fighting in a swimsuit wasn't the most at conventional sight in the world, but Aurelie was certainly having fun.

Back at the beginning of the runway, they concluded their spar as graciously as they began, pulling their last strokes and standing still across from each other. They bowed once more to each other, and then to the audience below. Before leaving the runway, Aurelie blew a kiss to the crowd and whispered a soft, grateful "Thank you" to the Mega Gallade, her cheeks flushed with exertion and enjoyment.

The next round definitely played to her advantage. Maybe it was a good thing she didn’t switch out her Gardevoir, after all.

“Oh, Momo, you know this is all about you…” she said to the dual-type, who gave her the ‘giggling’ pose, accompanied by the same ‘evil eye’ that meant she was definitely up to something.

If there was one thing she could definitely one-up her husband on, it was this.

The moment it was their turn to hit the catwalk, she’d temporarily slipped on one of her fighting gauntlets (because that’s where her Key Stone was) and even if it looked a little out of place—well, she was committing to this, no turning back anymore—

“Let’s go.”

Around halfway down the platform, she flashed the crowd this wink and an accompanying snarky grin, before tapping the Key Stone that was in her gauntlet—and letting her Gardevoir prance on ahead of her for a few steps.

Taking this as the cue, the (shiny) Gardevoir moved forward, letting the light of Mega Evolution envelop her form, before exploding and revealing her new form—ooh, was that a funeral dress she was wearing?

(Because instead of the standard Gardevoir in a wedding dress, Momiji, Izumi’s Gardevoir, wore a funeral dress.)

Right then and there, the spindly arms rose to the sky, before launching up a lunar burst of energy, the Moonblast exploding into a thousand little stars at the highest point of impact, showering the runway with glittering lights that twinkled like diamonds.

From behind the curtains she emerges, an ethereal transformation into a vessel fit for sailing the stars; Nenet's steps are purposeful, the careful application of low-grade fireworks sparking silver and blue with each step she takes - galaxies birthed and destroyed with each measured stride.

When she reaches the end of the runway Nenet pauses, her thoughts flitting back to her childhood, to this homage she displays of cherished memories; memories of sitting by her father, watching a crew trek through space to explore, inciting her wonder at the stars beyond. Especially, though, she remembers the communications officer on the bridge, a woman who was elegant, intelligent, unparalleled, whose actress had recently passed away.

Her gaze imperious, an upturn of her full lips, Nenet lifts her hand, palm outwards, and displays the mega stone now held between her parted middle and ring finger in a sign well-attributed to the series. She winks, coy and regal as the woman who brought her the stars.

Although commendable, the lack of Pokemon does not fit the judges' criteria. They had a specific prompt for the participants to fulfil, and she'd already failed it, hadn't she?

She poses a traditional ~~star guardian~~ magical girl pose as her lent mega-ring begins to glow, illuminating the crowd with a cascade of blinding light. For a moment, nobody knows which Pokemon was affected by the transformation - but it's revealed with the mighty roar of a Charizard.

It dives towards the stage with the sole intent of lighting it on fire. Not metaphorically. The fire-type does just that, launching a FLAMETHROWER at none other than Katherine herself. It is careful enough to not torch members of the crowd or integral props for the show's production.

Katherine herself bathes in the dragon's flames. Only when the smoke clears, it's revealed that she was also unaffected by the fire. She does look a tiny bit hotter than before, though.

mega evolution? annalise stares at the compact one of the contest attendants places in her cupped palms, dumbfounded. she's never dabbled in mega evolution, never held so much power in her hands — but here she is, at a swimsuit contest, opening the compact with the pad of her thumb with the care of someone dismantling a bomb. inside, the cotton candy-colored ALTARIANITE sits in a recess in the metal, glittering under the hot hoennian sun.[break][break]
her sunbeam smile has an edge of nervousness this time she walks down the runway, lessened only by the presence of her altaria overhead. at the end of her walk, she flashes her compact to the audience. energy thrums beneath the cover even before she flips it open. exposing the jeweled core, she grazes her fingers across it to activate the mega stone. [break][break]

[break][break]light begins to glow from the compact, bathing the audience in a soft pink hue. overhead, cotton candy is enveloped in a ball of bright white. after what feels like an eternity for annalise, cotton candy frees herself from her cocoon with a melodic cry, scattering the light into shimmers with the broad unfurling of her wings.

Bowie simply grunts in response, as Callan turns his bead bracelet, finding the gian iridiscent purple jewel at its center, as he raies it into the air, a light burns from his wrist, transforming Bowie into his enlarged, Mega-Toxtriciy form, the face of Teravolt. He swings his fist sideways to hold the pose, and let the Mega Evolution energy dissipate into sparks before him.

As far as what she knew, Metagross could Mega Evolve. However, given the nontrivial number of large Steel-types (mostly Aggron) which had taken the Mega Evolution stage before her, Elaine absolutely wanted to take advantage of the chance to differentiate herself from the crowd ever so slightly.

Though she would have fancied a book or a journal type accessory for a key stone, the flying water everywhere wasn't the most conducive to that. So, she took something far more elegant, more befitting of the Pokemon she had chosen to bring on display alongside her.

A pocket watch with a stone swung before her eyes as the light from the stone embedded within erupted and consumed the Absol as they walked together, slowly but elegantly towards the end of the runway.

As the light faded, a new form emerged, sporting a pair of snow-white wings while the young woman stood by her side.

Symon was poor and not really into the whole ‘Pokemon as a source of power’ thing. He liked cute Pokemon the most-- so it made sense that he didn’t have any capable of Mega-evolving, a little bit. It still kinda sucked to be asked for a handout and having to switch out Verm for a strange Pokemon took the wind out of his sail, but when he saw all the other routines and Mega-evolving Pokemon, he found his passion again.

He picked a very pretty but companionable Hatterene, and as he held the Hatterenite in his hand, he started to come up with a plan.

His pose would be simple, but effective in showing off his beautifully toned physique. It was a pretty textbook Mega-stone set up, with the gem embedded in the back of a glove. He took to the stage with Hatterene behind him, and on his first steps, he struck a defensive stance, dragging the fingers of his ungloved hand over the back of the Megatsone and activating it.

Hatterene glowed with a vibrant pink light, expanding and growing to an enormous height; then Sy flexed his chest forward and his shoulders back, and from around him the Mega Hatterene let loose a cannonade of dazzling gleams, sending a burst of starlight sparks whizzing and fizzing over the crowd. They erupted in booms of blue and baby pink, scattering the crowd with sparkles.

He strode to the end of the stage, his new Mega Hatterene friend in tow, posing and flexing as he went, and at the end, he gave a bow, flaring out the mega accessory; Hatterene released upon the crowd a cloud of magic powder-- harmless enough to people, it mingled with the remnants of the dazzling gleams, filling the air with a fragrant, pink and lilac smoke.

"No. Nuh-uh. Not doing it. Not on your life, Bongo. Never. Don't you dare." Ashley shakes his head. The third round incorporates a mega stone, but he doesn't have one of those! So Bongo, his little Grookey, dressed in a sun visor and a tie for comedic effect, he points to the chart. By doing a silly little pose, Ashley can get his lead back! Why wasn't he wanting to win? The Grookey, again, points to the charge. Ashley's face red as a beet, puts his face in his hands.

He returns Bongo.

Now he really hoped he didn't win. Removing his jacket that he had in the first round, Ashley walks up the walkway of the stage. His hands shaking, as he begins to grab the Pokeball that holds Bongo in his hands... it's shaking, but as he activates Gigantamax, he watches the ball expand, and throw it behind him, before spinning in place to begin his ultimate pose. They wanted a show? He'd begrudgingly give them it.

With butt out, knees bent, and arms to each side of him, he makes a pose in order to win back the competition... by embarrassing himself so much that he wants to die.

Surely no one would see this or care.

Giant Bongo merely looks on with the face of a monkey who could easily break the law. That was the Grookey's only desire. Chaos. As the Grookey's face begins to shrivel up in the best way possible, the crowd can see it was truly Bongo's idea, with one singular look down towards Ashley's embarrassing pose.

each of the other contestants seem flashier than his, so it's a surprise that he makes it to the third round at all. yet, he knows better than to question the judge's choices.

[break][break] after all, what was it they said? flash over substance?

[break][break] the third round draws near and it's jayden's turn to take the stage once more. summer heat blasts in the sky from above, the crowd roar of crowd only subsiding to allow jayden to take the stage. he walks to middle stage, straight-laced and unreadable as ever, and pauses towards the center.

[break][break] it's only then that his shiny gengar makes itself noticiable, running up behind jayden and then leaping into the air. dark pulse and hypnosis echo behind jayden, only crashing into the invisible protect barrier that his yamask erects to protect it's trainer from the assault. [break][break]

Angelo is nothing but an opportunist, so of course he's going to take advantage of whatever freebies he can take. Temporary or not.

With a sparkling new jewel attached to a sturdy bracelet braided out of leather, one small blue and white bird is traded for another.

Consider this a test run before he commits to buying an altarianite of his own.

Spilling out along the runway and furling over the closest members of the crowd comes a HAZE of mist. Cool and mysterious, it blocks out the light atop the stage just as a beautifully haunting song stretches from the unknown beyond.

A siren song, hidden beneath the mist as thick and tempting as uncharted ocean territories.

At the end of the runway, a silhouette can be seen raising a nonchalant hand, sudden spikes of energy burst through the veil from Angelo's wrist like a club's laser light show.

With a stretch of her mega evolved wings, the last of the clouds scatter in a sparkling display of dewy mist and untapped power, revealing the Altaria's altered form above the crowd.

She swoops to hover behind Angelo then, skies clear and enchanted song fading.

Let's hope they don't turn the water jets on again...

Walking down the runway, Jack is absolutely soaked. His hair hangs damply against his head as seawater drips from the tips, pooling in the indentations of his clavicles. Runnels of water trickle between the outlines of his toned abs as sunlight sparkles off of droplets which cling to his tanned skin. Even the jet-black board shorts he wears are saturated with salt water, leaving pools of water behind him as he walks. As he reaches the midpoint of the runway, he raises his hand aloft as the raucous caw of Jack's Corviknight, Poe, echoes from above amid the flapping of wings. Touching the borrowed megastone affixed to a bracelet on his wrist, the ominous pokemon begins to transform.

As Poe swoops in, the mega transformation takes hold. The Raven Pokemon spins tightly behind Jack and beats his wings sending a gust of air exploding down the runway. It tears past Jack, blowing the salty water from his body out over the crowd. With a final caw, Poe launches himself into the air as Jack turns back and walks away from the crowd.

MEGA EVOLUTION IS A HOENN STAPLE. it’s the defining discovery of this generation. trainers far and wide flock to the region in order to elevate their pokemon to the next level.

there is only one exception: FERNANDO SILPH.

no matter how much he tries to downplay his own prowess, the region has come to recognize his worth as a trainer. many rank him among the strongest. hopeful challengers often save his gym for the last, knowing full well to expect a lengthy battle that offers no alternatives to raw combat.

a trainer of his distinguish does not rely on MEGA EVOLUTION. in fact, he’s never partaken despite his lofty collection of unidentified MEGA STONES.

which is why when he stands on stage, with the rental in his hand, he stares at it blankly. how does one activate it? he’s not sure. he’s never experienced it himself and all documentation goes into the applications of its use—never the actual trigger.

“…!”

he grips the rental MEGA STONE a bit too tightly and the protective case around it shatters into a million piece. that is apparently enough for it to activate behind him.
