"Whoa!" Julia exclaimed with a laugh as she pulled up a huge Mantine. "Hey there, big guy! You could probably carry a bunch of people on your back, huh?" The Mantine dooted. That probably meant yes. Once it was safely unhooked, it joined the rest of the school, where a couple of the smaller fish Pokémon took refuge under its wide wingspan. Julia had to be careful when casting her line out again; she had quite the entourage with her!

Oh now that was a big 'un. There wasn't much doubt in his mind that he'd settle on keeping that hulking Mantine, but there was still the possibility of something else. A Mantine wasn't that fast... but they were graceful. Ultimately, he supposed, it would come down to whether or not the Water-type was good in a race. Perhaps it had the endurance? ... Again he would simply have to see what else the ocean hid away beneath its waves.

Alex's little secluded inlet had not been giving him the best of luck in terms of catches, so Alex decided to use the excuse of needing a new fishing spot to explore Slateport properly only having been to the hotspots of the Summer Festival after his arrival to Hoenn.[break][break]

Rather than swim all the way out to his usual fishing spot with his Sharpedo, Josh guided the aquatic predator around a hundred feet off the easternmost dock and cast his line there. He wasn't expecting any big bites, but they were rapidly running out of daylight. Slateport's nightlife would be able to guide him back to the beach, and back to his hotel room, if the sun fully set while he was still waiting for a nibble. It was a good thing he did, too; the sky was full of oranges and maroons as the sun sank below the horizon. Only then did he get a bite...
