TROUBLE IN TURN TWO!

THE START OF EVERY RACE was by far the most chaotic moment, fifteen large Pokémon fighting for early position. There would inevitably be contact. Feet and paws were going to get stepped on, and it was almost never any individual Pokémon's fault, nor any individual racer's fault. kyle lopez 's ARCANINE happened to be the unfortunate victim this time, the hooves of Eva Morales 's RAPIDASH getting the better of the exchange of their tangled feet. It was a rough break for both of them, the blue-maned equine losing balance and taking far longer than usual to accelerate. Toshiaki Macallan 's heads-up decision to have his ARCANINE create boots of FLAMETHROWER around his feet saved them from being trampled upon in a similar fashion. [break][break]

Julia Davis 's AND MATIAS SILPH 's DODRIO BOTH SURGED AHEAD EARLY, all four brains between Pokémon and racer working in sync with one another to cleanly weave around the competition. Both found themselves near the front of the pack, with Julia leading the race early! Gwyar Wledig was not far behind, his RAPIDASH's SMART STRIKE letting them closely tail the DODRIO in front of them. [break][break]

THE BACK-AND-FORTH TURNS OF THE OPENING STRETCH proved challenging for much of the field, and the slithering titans ridden by Kaida Adachi and Elinor Anderson didn't help matters much either, shaking the ground in a small radius around them and making it difficult for them to be passed. The Councilwoman timed her STEELIX's moves perfectly, rumbling around the corner and leaving metallic streaks behind to give the racers behind her, and even herself on future laps, a cue on how to navigate the harsh turn.[break][break]

WHILE Isaac Merlo AND HIS TAUROS swerved around them unscathed, several others were not so fortunate. Matt Vice was among them; while he and his ARCANINE had done a lot of training for handling curves at high speeds, the species simply was not nimble. Quick braking saved them from kissing the outside wall. Josh Devlin had the opposite problem; he reined his MANECTRIC too quickly to one side, the electric Pokémon tripping on the first corner. His momentum caused them to slide all the way across the course, nicodemus unken forced to slow his GOGOAT down substantially to avoid a collision with the Leader. boruta maher's DODRIO suffered the worst of all. The flightless bird tripped over the first right-angle corner so sharply that the two tumbled into the inside wall, the trainer flying over the wall and out of bounds. The two were ELIMINATED FROM CONTENTION as a result.[break][break]

THE PSYCHIC-TYPES under the control of Razz Kingsman and Alexei Ivanov battled it out from the line, as well, the Fortree Leader holding onto his pole position for less than a second before being passed by several Pokémon. The Elite Ranger's METAGROSS hovered inches above the track like an antigravity racing machine, tilting its body to aid just enough in navigating the course without slowing down.[break][break]

PROMPT: About halfway through the course was a ski-jump-esque slope followed by a jump to a much lower section of the course. There was also an extremely steep cliff designed for the Onix and Steelix to slide down. Past the jump were gently zigzagging turns with extremely thick weeds surrounding them. While not landing back on the course wouldn't immediately disqualify them, it would sap a Pokémon's speed substantially to have to power through the weeds. [break][break]

Toshiaki’s standing was better than he originally thought! For a no-name racer, he and his partner are doing pretty good for themselves— however overconfidence is a killer and he’s not about to jinx them with bad karma. Keep focused. Stay alert. [break][break]
The slope approaches fast, but Toshiaki has a quick wit many overlooked. Maybe this is risky, but he has to try! [break][break]
“Topaz! Use ROCK SLIDE, and use ONE rock as a launchpad!” [break][break]
On cue, the rock is summoned and swiftly used as a launchpad, subsequently crushed under the weight of Arcaine’s fearsome feet. Without directly using the slope designed for the rock snakes, Arcanine manages to launch downward instead, utilizing a short cut! Physics rule![break][break]
The great canine lands below to the next portion of the course and keeps running, navigating and dodging those weeds as best she can while also conscious of her stamina. Go! Go! Go![break][break]
TLDR; Toshiaki commands Arcanine to use rock slide to use a singular rock as a launchpad to aim downward (like an arrow) gaining speed a natural way rather than by the move itself. Clever![break][break]

Indifferent to his standings, Nico concentrated on the course as Lilypad’s sprint continued. Her top speed was not impressive, yet she bristled joyfully as she maintained her top speed with ease. Weaving through the twists and turns were easy for her, the artificial obstacles being much easier to tolerate than the unforgiving mountains in the wild. Yet the race proposed a different obstacle. Bodies in the way that were undoubtedly faster, yet consequently not as swift. Josh Devlin took a slide across the course with his Manetric, and Nico couldn’t help but wince at the unexpected sight. He’d had to pull back on his reigns, and Lilypad had the same thought in mind, sliding to a near-stop and stuck bounding in a brief trot, refusing to stand still. ”All good, you two?!” Nico called. He didn’t expect Josh to answer- instead, he hoped to see both recover, and then sprint off ahead.

Despite not caring about their placement in the race, seeing multiple bodies and blurs speed off ahead of them made it clear to Nico that they were already near the back. Before the race, he might have groaned at this, but after seeing the slide Josh took… Nico honestly wanted to let everyone pass. Preferring to avoid a collision instead of securing a good rank.

Lilypad, however, was much more driven. She surprised her trainer as her leaves rustled and shifted around his saddle. All the lights fixated on the track obscured the tiny glow her Growth caused, and Nico’s heart raced as she surged forward into the first opening she saw. ”I’m with you, girl!” Nico said, happy to be cautious, yet even prouder of her unshaken determination.

With Team Julia starting all the way back in fourteenth place, they'd have to work even harder to get past the chaos at the starting line. Julia leaned forward in Chester's saddle, and when the signal to go was given, she gave his sides a tight squeeze, cueing him to go full speed ahead. The sudden acceleration pushed Julia back a bit, but she quickly righted herself, and then it was smooth sailing from there. She'd gotten used to these faster sustained speeds lately, and that was going to help a lot in this race.

[break][break]With four sets of eyes keeping an eye on the rest of the competition, Julia and Chester were able to quickly weave their way through the crowd. This gave them a good head start on the rest of the competition, allowing them to take the hilly stretch of the track and the following sharp turns without too much rush. Once they'd cleared it, Julia looked behind her to see Gwyar Wledig right on their tail, his Rapidash's horn glowing. As much as Julia wanted to know just what he was doing, a reminder squawk from Chester's left head reminded her to keep an eye on the track itself.

[break][break]Ahead was a slope down to a jump to a lower section of the track. Under her helmet, Julia beamed. This was one of Chester's specialties, though the descent was greater than usual. But that just made it a challenge!

Ignoring every other contestant, Kaida still bristled as Elinor Anderson's Steelix passed Kjoll. She didn't expect to stay ahead of the pack initially, not truly. If they were to succeed in outlasting the rest of them, however, they had to stay ahead of the more sturdy beast.

"Let's be a little reckless!"

She yelled above the din of the crowd, their faces starting to blur as Kjoll consented to her order and pushed his speed. The dirt churned into a cloud behind him as he zoomed for the slide, conjuring up an Ancientpower for a makeshift barrier, hoping to keep himself from falling off course as he slid down.

Much to her surprise, they were passing one Pokémon after the other. The first obstacle proved of little difficult.

Sure hope you’ve thought of something better, Josh! She thought with excitement as she pushed onwards atop her Steelix.

The Steel behemoth slithered toward the next obstacle indifferent to the presence of the other Pokémon. They would have to get off his way if they did not wish to be crushed. Too bad for the riders Elinor shared the same competitive spirit.

That’s also why there was but one thing to do when the jump appeared in front of them.

A ferocious toothy grin emerged on her lips. “Steel, straight on. We are taking that jump!”

I am sorry Josh… She thought, though she’d be lying if she was excited as well.

A loud roar of acknowledgment came from the Steelix as it charged forward building as much momentum as it could before sending itself flying over the ledge. Ready to land in full motion upon the rest of the track, even if it meant causing a fair bit of damage to it.

But he went back to focus. That focus was only beating one person in this entire race, so he was back to focusing on that.

Saber's quick acceleration caused him to zip into first place very briefly, but was overtaken by other Pokémon with their superior top speed. The two giant snakes, normally not permitted within the confines of the Racing Grounds' courses, demonstrated why Josh forbade them from races per the Gym Challenge. His new hires were going to be working overtime after the race was over!

The tremors from the titanic Pokémon slithering past at impressive speeds threw off Josh's timing. His heart skipped a beat from not one, but two near misses with boruta maher and nicodemus unken , the former of which landed out of bounds. On one hand, the poor Dodrio; on the other, it was one less opponent to worry about. There would still be plenty of opportunities for Josh and Saber to catch up though; if there was one thing Manectric were good at, it was recovering from mistakes thanks to the species' explosive acceleration.

After coming out of a series of sharp 90-degree turns, Josh came to the course's large jump, its downslope specially modified for the Onix and Steelix among the field. The moment his Manectric reached the downslope, the Mauville Leader started squeezing and jabbing at the electric Pokémon's sides repeatedly. He felt his stomach lurch at the trough of the ramp, mustering the strength to flick the reins sharply with both hands to command a brave, high leap. It was a good thing Saber's paws could take a lot of punishment; it was a long way down!

there's a reason why he told MATIAS SILPH to die instead of eating dirt. holding up all the way to the back was expected given his pokemon of choice. definitely a personality issue more than anything else.

he knew he shouldn't have gambled on wil.

as he holds close to the fire-type, he pats off the blue flames from the pokemon as much as he could. not that it would stop its current outrage, but he can always think that it helps. it helps psychologically, he convinces himself.

as they go further the race, they reach a point where no obstacle stood in their way beside a ditch. there's no finesse in the arcanine's actions as it relies on brute strength to get over everything under its current state.

Eva’s heart was pounding about as fast as the Rapidash’s hooves. The curves comeo n quick! And as prepared as Eva thought they were, the sharp turns got the best of the equine. The STOMP was not nearly as effective as she hoped it would have been!

“Heeyah! Go Hestia!” she encouraged the Rapidash to jolt forward with a sharp pressure from her heels. Up ahead, a straight away ended in a rather menacing looking jump. They had to be SMART about this, and leap at the precise moment to successfully sail over the obstacle.

MATIAS SILPH goads them from the top of a tight knit pack. Typical.

“We’re comin’ for ya!” she promised, leaning down against the nape of the mare’s neck as she summoned a SMART STRIKE to attempt to leap over the jump and onto the lower part of the course to avoid the weeds that threatened to tangle the bulkier racers.

Hestia uses SMART STRIKE to help with the jump!

Why did I know I was going to lose my hold on that? I knew it! he thought to himself, hunching down as low as possible as practically half of the people overtook him and his current position.

At least the path was… straight… for now…

And then he saw the jump.

Was this the only chance he was going to get to ‘fly’ through should he take it? Well, it was coming up fast, and damn he was absolutely certain his boyfriend was going to get a laugh out of this (hi Guillermo Marceliño, watch Bird get trampled in a ground race!) as he took a deep breath and blocked out all the noise, willing himself to focus.

“Azula, I swear. Don’t have Zuza take it out on you!” was all he was going to say as the jump came up—

And they took it.

Where they would land… nobody knew.

Seeing the jump that would be required Razz holds on the best he could to Cobalt as he gives the other a knock on his helm to have the other use MAGNET RISE. As he knows that psychic could only help so much, and if they wanted speed they needed something that would ensure that nothing would hold him back. [break][break]

It felt as if it gave an extra boost when it came to the jump, and hopefully the rise would be enough to make sure the landing wasn't as hard for when they would have to go again with the zigs and the zags. "Doing good buddy," he encourages.

It was only natural that they had already claimed their place at the top three; now they could focus on gaining on first place.

Gwyar paid no mind to those who had fallen behind them, eyes narrowing at Julia Davis's back as he smiled. The buffeting wind against his cheeks, the trampling of the earth, the rough motion of his body as Llamrei charged forth.

Pokemon Racing was incredibly fun, as always. He much preferred it to car racing, no thank you very much, Eva Morales.

And now... the race could begin in earnest. A leap down to a steep hill...

They could pull this off.

"Llamrei! We're jumping!" He shouted with a growing grin, hugging his body close to the mare as she neighed loudly in response, her tone rather smug.

Well, obviously!

His stomach leapt up as gravity took hold, the earth rapidly approaching before the horse landed front hooves first, shrugging off the heavy landing and launching forth into the weaving, zig-zagging roads.

"Good girl! Now, you know what to do!" Shouted Gwyar as he patted her neck gently, grinning wide. "If it isn't broken!"

Llamrei's horn became aglow once more, guiding her through the zig-zagging pattern of the track with almost mechanical precision.

His Thrashing kept him from veering off the road too far, a surprising amount of control coming from such a bulky beast. Isaac gave the Tauros a scratch behind the ears, then spurred him on to avoid falling too far behind. After all, Matt Vice was right behind him, and like hell he'd give him any quarter![break][break]

Besides, this next obstacle was exactly Buffaloman's jam. Pure speed, pure adrenaline, letting the wild heart of a Tauros run free and unbridled? Yes please. Tauros may not have looked it, but they were apparently strong enough jumpers to hop over six feet fences from a running start. In comparison to the last series of curves, this was gonna be no problem.[break][break]

Some Pokemon had moves and fancy tricks to break out. Hell, most of Isaac's Pokemon would have broken out some sort of shenanigans by now. But Buffaloman was built different. Buffaloman was straightforward. Buffaloman was direct. Buffaloman was, arguably, rather simple. Buffaloman didn't need to do all that fancy thinking.

All Buffaloman needed to do was leap, sailing through the air like a missile made of meat. Willpower and leg strength carried him up, and weight and sheer momentum would carry him back down. Isaac even struck a little pose for the cameras at the peak of his Tauros' ascent. For good luck, of course.[break][break]
