Big speeches, petty jabs, sexual tension... Yep, this seems like your average Team Rocket gathering. All that's missing is some yelling and some crying, and things'll really be in full swing. So, fifteen minutes or so? Sounds about right.

Arceus, you wish you could drink right now. But that cigarette at Velmos' funeral had you coughing up bile for days, and you'll be damned if you're going through that again. So, snoozing it is.

Snoozing in a busy room full of loud people while this Lycanroc won't stop bothering you.

"C'mon, dude... Fuck off..." You attempt to shoo Luna away, and when that fails, you simply turn over and refuse to acknowledge her entirely. "Trying to sleep here..."

But among those gathered, there's one set of tiny hands whose more than willing to give this wolf a snack.

"oh my gosh a DOGGY (U・ᴥ・U) here mrs doggy have a treat!"

Eager to please his very big and very toothy new friend, Meltan scampered over and claimed a half-eaten cocktail sausage, before offering it up to the Lycanroc. Predictably, this ended as well as you'd expect.

CRUNCH.

Immediately, you jerk upright, and turn to see a squirming little blob of lithium flailing around in Luna's mouth.

"Hey, HEY!" You suddenly find yourself much more animated than before, lurching over to try and force open the frightfully powerful jaws of the beast. "Let him go! Drop him! I SAID DROP HIM!"

Neon is quick to lock in on Naomi Sato near howard slayte and his betting. The admin draws the crowd but Neon refrains. He wouldn't trust that man with his money. Not to mention Tempest Quinn was with them. Nothing had changed since the man had become a beast: still irritating, not worth his time. He stared impassively as if looking past him before drawing closer to Lulu Flint and the blue dog begging for treats. [break][break]

That is, until he realized he had none in hand and turned back to the snack table. But he never makes it to the snack table, plopping down on the couch and knocking back a glass as the screen reflect the next round. He's furiously scribbling notes once more, pausing as BARNABY FINCH joined him. [break][break]

"Only if you wanna burn bills. I'm surprised he knows what to do with our books when he hopelessly loses all his own money." Neon said with a laugh. But he had a right to some skepticism. It seemed every time he met with Howard the man was doing slightly worse. Maybe it's the action they've all been seeing but Neon suspected something else wrong with his beloved admin. "Some candidates I'd like to offer mentorship with. I think they're showing signs of being better suited for my kind of work." [break][break]

He shows no signs of discomfort around Bee, leaning back into the couch and onto his shoulder as he offered the notes up to avatar while stealing a sip from his glass, now that Neon's own was empty. A little sleight of hand to keep his skills from rusting. A keen eye would note he was almost as close to Barnaby as he typically was around jayden cross or fern delaney . Actions overly familiar under the light haze of champagne. He seemed to be more focused on explaining his thoughts on potential spies than anything else.

All the while, Diomedes hovers, perhaps curious, perhaps a little put out as Neon. Who was this guy? They didn't look familiar to the Unown.

Much like his co-host Zev Harcourt for the event, Jayden remained silent as he watched the Gauntlet from the glass railing. His arms were crossed over his chest, eyes narrowed as he observed the participants with a critical eye — each and every one of those Grunts were ones that Jayden held in his own esteem. He knew their strengths, their weaknesses, their overall stats.

[break][break] In theory, he could've easily calculated who should win.

[break][break] But that was what the younger version of himself would have said. He would have foolishly thought that numbers were all what mattered — but the current version of himself knew others.

[break][break] Life was not always so simple.

[break][break] Looking closer, one would see that his arms were not merely crossed over his chest. In fact, in one of his hands clutched a silver ring — one that fern delaney might know well.

[break][break] The admin was lost in thought, perhaps about things that weren't the Gauntlet and the upcoming war.

[break][break] It was Zev Harcourt's voice that broke him out of his thoughts, and his head inclined towards the other, vision clearing just as a moon over a cloudy night sky.

[break][break] Flashes of each of the participants ran over his mind's eye. Instinct dictated that he should choose - as THEO BECKETT had suggested - dorian westcliff, but he remembered how quickly Jayden had been able to disarm him in their recent skirmish. He knew both parker jones and Hitoshi Inoue excelled at hand-to-hand combat but in the same breath, both were simple minded. Easily roused. And had Parker yet learned the discipline to be cruel, even when her heart said otherwise?

[break][break] Rhys Collins could heal wounds more than he could cause them, and Aurelie Lefevre could craft weapons better than she could use them.

[break][break] "Oscar used to be a Beast, before obligation demanded him away." After all, both he and Oscar had signed onto SPECTRA together, once upon a time. "But my vote is on Yukimura."

"What favor could be so desperate to warrant such a thing?" she asked him dubiously, an eyebrow delicately arched.[break][break]

His aim was undoubtedly something frustrating. Humiliation perhaps, or some sort of performative subservience to indicate how docile and attentive he wanted her and Zev Harcourt to be for Rocket.[break][break]

"Such terrible ideas must be spinning in your uninventive little mind. Consider me curious."[break][break]

Resigned, she ultimately accepted his offer with a heavy sigh, waving the matter away as she sank into a nearby sofa. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw BARNABY FINCH approach mint frost, but said nothing. Instead, she wet her lips with more drink.[break][break]

Around this moment, she belatedly noticed the Lycanroc fur marring her pristine Sygna Suit's white spidersilk, and then the Pokemon who had caused such a thing to occur.[break][break]

"Ugh," she said with palpable disgust, moving to shoo the canine from her side. She was truly more of a Sprigatito person. "What sort of nonsense--?"[break][break]

Was it drooling? An annoyed look flashed across her face, and as harsh words almost further spilled from her lips, she noticed the peculiar creature struggling to escape the canine's strong jaw.[break][break]

"Bad dog!" she hissed, holding the Lycanroc down just as Shred was imploring it to drop the hapless Pokemon. "Drop the Meltan!"[break][break]

It defied all reason that such a mannerless creature belonged to Zev Harcourt, of all people.

Ameena had obviously hoped to hold on longer, but she was pleased with the outcome of mutual destruction. It was the least harmful to her ego, though she had entered primarily for her own confirmation of growth. Pokemon battles were not a strongsuit of hers as she had long since used pokemon non-traditionally in war. Entering the Gauntlet had been a step out of her comfort zone, and while her strategy hadn't been a winning one, that seemed more a result of her opponent's well-chosen pokemon than a flawed strategy itself. [break][break]

"That was nice work," she complimented Rhys Collins easily. "Reuniclus was a good choice. I had been betting on my toxic spikes." She would fold her own unused Reuniclus into her teams. Rhys' moveset seemed advantageous in a lot of scenarios. What she'd seen of it, anyways. "A more offensive approach might have kept your Reuniclus in the battle." [break][break]

Speculation more than criticism, but she shared it thoughtfully. "I should have chosen a more aggressive approach over waiting for someone to enter my trap, seeing as it cannot be effective against all pokemon." She let her hair down now that they were in the observation deck. She was stunned for only a moment at seeing just how many elite Rockets were watching, but she relaxed again. Her value to Rocket was more on the research side of things, so it was unlikely she would get a performance improvement plan for the gauntlet outcome.

And surprise them she did. Or at the very least, MAKI YUKIMURA's dismissal surprised - and disappointed - jayden cross but he made no mention of it except for a slight shift in his expression.

[break][break] Still, parker jones and Hitoshi Inoue made it through, the latter bringing a slight smile to his face as he witnesses the swordsman whooping and hollering in the battle pit below.

[break][break] When ameena abadi enters the deck, however, he turns to greet her with a subtle nod of his head. He notices that she'd accompanied by Rhys Collins, which then draws his attention back to the two bickering Underbosses.

[break][break] "What happens if you're both wrong?" he asks.

[break][break] Should it have come from anyone else, perhaps the comment would have been biting. As it was, however, it came from Jayden so there was no dedicated change or shift in inflection. Genuine curiosity flits through his sapphire blue gaze before it falls back on mint frost who is cuddling somewhere with BARNABY FINCH.

Luna was a good dog. One could even say she was the best dog. So when Shred's Meltan went over to feed her a snack, she happily accepted it. How could she not? It was not her fault that Meltan got stuck in her mouth. [break][break]

Neither was it her fault that Meltan had a delicious taste, the cool chrome of its body reminding her of the times Mother snuck her licks of ice cream behind Father's back. [break][break]

So when Shred and Elisabeth Fiorelli scolded her, she saw no reason why they ought to! The blue Lycanroc started to growl, baring her fangs at both humans. [break][break]

Zev glanced over his shoulder at the scene, took note of his Pokémon's raised hackles, and whistled a sharp note. Immediately, Luna ceased to resist, and instead looked at her master with unconditional love. Understanding that playtime was over, she dropped Meltan unceremoniously onto the floor and padded over to Zev's side, where she sat obediently. [break][break]

It was all worth the subtle movement of Father's fingers as he scratched her behind the ear. [break][break]

The door to the observation deck opened before the Rocket Beast could comment on jayden cross's prediction. Zev turned to acknowledge those who entered, meeting each one's gaze before turning back to his companion. [break][break]

"If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on Gerald Kaiser. He has a lot of experience, and he's ruthless."

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Aurelie exhaled a long, disappointed sigh when her faithful Golurk was defeated, despite its earthen armaments, but took care to salute her opponent politely when the arena lights flashed a bloody red. Her eye widened in astonishment when she saw the other grunts who were also eliminated.

"Rhys! Ameena! Oscar?" she exclaimed aloud as the group was herded up the stairs leading to the observation deck. "No way! Though...at least I feel like I'm in good company, even if getting knocked out in Round 1 is the worst.

"Come on, everyone," the redhead added expansively, addressing the group of eliminated grunts as a whole, as she sauntered onto the observation deck. "How about a round of consolation drinks? And a toast, too, for all of us."

Turning toward the table of drinks and refreshments, she ruefully passed over the champagne flutes and chose a generous goblet of sangria. Hoisting it high, Aurelie declaimed, "Though we may not be the victor, may we all win something today: Knowledge on how we each can do better, in and out of battle."

Whether anyone else echoed her sentiments or took a drink, the redhead promptly drank deep of her delicious, fruit-infused concoction. Only then did Aurelie turn around and nod her head in greeting to the assembled Rocket leaders.

Most of them appeared deep in conversation or engrossed with the view of the continuing tournament. It was a little disturbing how many she knew, by this point. Or...well, had interacted with, anyway. Even if she spent a hundred more years in Rocket, Aurelie wasn't sure she'd ever fully, truly get to know any of the leadership. Not even Howard, whom she didn't even recognize at first without his hat and with a ponytail.

"Anything interesting happening up here?" she asked, eyeing the oddly contentious-looking pair of underbosses in particular. Her ears did perk up at the bit of byplay about betting on potential winners. "A little fun side action, it sounds like?"

Aurelie chuckled weakly, a flush rising over her fair skin. "I do hope no one was unfortunate enough to bet on me."

"Unfortunate" wasn't the word she was thinking of internally, but the redhead wasn't drunk enough or suicidal enough to call this group of powerful monsters "foolish". Frankly, most of them would probably be happier being called a monster than a fool. Now, that was an unsettling thought.

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Had it been someone else from Rocket leadership who told her that they bet on her to win the entire Gauntlet—someone with whom Aurelie felt better acquainted and who had seen her at her worst, like howard slayte, jayden cross, Cillian Quinn, or even BARNABY FINCH—she would have responded with a cheerfully self-deprecating comment like, Well, you should've known better, shouldn't you?

But she and THEO BECKETT barely knew each other. What he was thinking with his bet—or with his even more startling offer—she had no idea. She eyed Theo quizzically, weighing her response.

"Well, I'm sorry to have disappointed you, sir," the redhead replied after a moment, her tone quiet and respectful. "I was disappointed by my performance too, so I can tell you you're hardly alone in that.

"I'd welcome your thoughts and help," she went on, bowing her head in acknowledgement. "I've already been thinking a lot about what I could've done differently, if another Pokemon would've been a better option, and whether setting a trap was the best opening tactic. A more experienced, veteran perspective would be very valuable."

In a way, his offer helped already. It reminded Aurelie that the grunts were here to learn and grow and that the leadership was here to study them and help them improve. These underbosses, admins, and Beasts weren't just here to watch the grunts perform for their pleasure, like gladiators fighting to the death for a heartless, bloodthirsty crowd.

Though the betting told her there was still an element of pleasure in it for them, unpleasantly enough.

Taking another sip of her sangria, she added, "After what so many of us suffered in that Megalopolan prison... I feel like it's impossible to be too ready for the worst anymore. I doubt that'll be the last we see of the Toxic Chain, Dynamaxed Pokemon, or Celebi and Palkia, after all."

He watches the screens with interest, eyes roving to the monitors. Though he's still relaxed, his eyes are keen. His interest keeps his attention sharp despite the little big of a buzz growing in the back of his head. “That doesn't surprise me at all.” He said as he watched ameena abadi , and Aurelie Lefevre fall. He nudges BARNABY FINCH as the screens flicker over their visages. “What Ameena lacks in combat prowess she makes up for in research. I've been skimming some of her work lately when I'm in the labs.” He said before adding, “Unfortunately, for our local blacksmith, I think she overestimated her trap. Maybe if she'd tapped into her partner's innate strength more she might've been able to knock out Kazuya Yoshida .” [break][break]

He makes his notes, scratching out words and adding others before looking up again. “I'm disappointed oscar clayton and Violet Fairbanks dropped though. Oscar's got a history like me but maybe that's why so many people gunned for him, and Violet has already started her SPECTRA training. I would've wanted her to last at least a round longer.” [break][break]

He brightens up seeing another scientist on screen. “kepler brueshaber's in fine form today though. Not to be underestimated. He's got bite, but…honestly I'm not sure for what.” [break][break]

“I don't know much about Alba Evovae , other than possibly seeing them in the labs. Though, perhaps if he's here he may be more inclined to subterfuge than science.” [break][break]

He stops speaking, perking up as the eliminated are allowed a top seat to see their betters continue the brutal competition. “Good effort oscar clayton! Adrian Malcolm !!” He hoped the food and drink was a nice participation prize. He immediately sat up, hearing jayden cross call his name. He calls back out proudly, “All my favorites are doing really well. I think kepler brueshaber has a chance at winning it for the science dept. If Kazuya Yoshida and Fenelle Miller don't beat him to it.”
