EXPOSITION



THE STEEL CHEF 2024 COOKING CONTEST IS UNDERWAY! can't help but grin when meets her eye in evident panic and other chefs visibly fretted over the Kalosian challenge. Ill-concealed glee glows in her face as she rubs her hands together with anticipation as the assorted contestants start getting to work.[break][break]

Though the time limit does prove more of a hurdle for Kalosian cuisine than for the previous rounds, every chef manages to throw together a dish before the final bell rings to signal the end of the round. As everyone bends forward to await the judges' decrees, the only sound that can be heard in the kitchen is an occasional excited, delighted little giggle from Aurelie.[break][break]

Evidently, the judges are in the mood for desserts this round. 's flammekueche meets with such widespread approbation and awe that the judges can only sit back in silence and unabashedly applaud. 's macarons receive impressed praise for their delicate sweetness and airy texture, and 's Pokepuffs are quickly snatched up and eaten with abandon.[break][break]

Although manages to score well with her beef bourguignon, most of the chefs that attempted more complicated dishes that take longer to develop the proper flavor profile suffer in the scoring. One judge critiques 's quiche Lorraine for being over-seasoned, and 's many sauces are viewed as overly ambitious, while 's coq au vin is regarded as a valiant effort that just needed more time.[break][break]

After all the scores are announced, it is with a faux-melancholy little sigh that Aurelie returns to the front. "Friends, Hoennians, countrymen," she says with mock solemnity. "Our time together is nearly drawing to an end! This next round will be the last of the contest...but hopefully not of anyone's cooking experiences or careers.[break][break]

"So, please, for the next round, put your heart and soul into the dish to commemorate this second annual Steel Chef contest. And the theme will be..." She pauses once more for effect. "In honor of the region that we learned most recently about as trainers... Paldea!"[break][break]

Then, she pauses and visibly scrambles for thought as she futilely tries to recall any Paldean phrases that might fit the occasion. Shaking her head, the redhead grins and shrugs. "Well, your time starts now! Begin!"


SETTING



THE STEEL CHEF COMPETITION KITCHEN



ALL CONTESTANTS have been brought into a large warehouse near the Lilycove City harbor reserved for the occasion. Inside the warehouse, you find yourself within a high-ceilinged, cavernous kitchen space equipped with numerous rows of prep and cooking stations, one for each chef to use.[break][break]

Each prep and cook station features a gleaming stainless-steel countertop, stainless steel sink, gas stove, and electric oven. At the front of the kitchen is the presentation area, where the judges will sit together at a long table when tasting and appraising the contestants' dishes.[break][break]



A hallway to one side of the kitchen leads to the equipment room and pantry, which contain all the materials, cookware, and ingredients that contestants might need. Planter boxes line one wall of the pantry, filled with fresh herbs and greens that chefs can harvest and use in their dishes.[break][break]

The rest of the pantry is filled with shelves, refrigerators, and bins of fresh produce, meat, seafood, spices and seasonings, dairy, breads and grains, and kitchen staples (eggs, salt, sugar, flour, butter, several different types of cooking oil, cooking wine, and more) to help chefs bring their unique concoctions to life.[break][break]

  • The Steel Chef 2024 contest will feature several rounds with deadlines.
  • Each round will feature a prompt to fulfill.
  • Each contestant must post once per round and make a roll at the end. If you miss a round, you won't be disqualified, but your chances to win will be lower. The roll will represent the judges' opinion of the contestant's dish.
  • At the end of the contest, the contestant with the highest roll total will be the winner. Therefore, please add up all your rolls at the end of each post.
  • Winning the contest will give your character a Clever Pokemon Contest win.
  • Like Shiv, I will not tolerate complaints about not being mentioned, tagged, acknowledged or feeling "useless" in a raid. Unlike Shiv, I'm arbitrary and capricious and will tag and mention people as I darn well please, including high- or low-rolling characters or characters who have the moxie to incorporate green eggs, purple shrimp, eldritch horror, or Eevee flavoring into their creations.

The judges didn't know what they were talking about. [break][break]

No matter. She had her eyes on the perfect dessert for the final round. It would be citrusy and fresh unlike its closest French counterpart which used vanilla. She got to beating a mixture with citrus peel. This was cooked with whole milk rather than cream. She chose Miltank milk to keep it classic, though she preferred Gogoat as their diet in particular elevated the flavor. She kept things traditional to avoid deviating too greatly.[break][break]

The sugar topping carmelized on top as she finished the cooking component of her dessert. A fresh, citrusy custard was sure to impress the judges. As she placed its rammekin on a clean plate, her mind wandered to what she had been doing months ago. Her excavation efforts in area zero had had mixed results, but she had met many fellow Rockets who'd taught her a lot. That was when she'd first met , and now they were going to produce a shadow Unown the moment their schedules aligned. She had few tangible trophies from those expeditions besides a shattered tera crystal, but she had learned plenty.

Another glare is shot at as she rubs her hand in malicious glee. No wonder she was in Rocket, she was a terrorist in the kitchen and a fiend on the commentator stand.

Vile witch. When this was over, he was going to give her a smith-sized smack on the head.

"Paldean food? Shit, man. They just make sandwiches over there. That's all they've ever made." He was pretty sure sliced bread had been invented in Paldea, too. It'd make sense for their obsession with eating sandwiches breakfast, lunch, and cena.

would say that there was a nuanced depth to the consumption of sandwiches, but all he ate was tuna and peanut butter on rye bread. Disgusting.

There wasn't even much of a reason to visit Paldea anymore. Hoenn had stolen its big tourism attraction in Area Zero. Sure, Hoenn was a mess of war crimes, human rights violations, and apocalyptic scenarios, but there wasn't a dome over the region anymore. People could come in, and they did.

Stupid tourists. At least this Area Zero wasn't that bad, except for the Regirock that kept throwing mountains at him when he tried to follow it.

"Alright, this sandwich is looking pretty good!" Howard looked at his Coalossal with a mix of pride and weariness. When this contest was over, he was swearing off cooking forever. He'd go back to his 'six dollar a month' budget. They had spent a few minutes working on it, now all that they had to do was stack the bread and skewer it.

"Alright, carefully..."

"Fuck."

An attempt was made and lessons were learned. Now it was time to bring this contest on home with a class of regional cuisine very near and dear to Eddie's heart, [break][break]

“Oh hell yeah!” Eddie turned to beam at Blanche, and the Growlithe beamed back, as bright and happy as her trainer felt, “Didja hear that, Blanche? Looks like we got a home-field advantage!” [break][break]

And Eddie knew just the thing to make as he went to grab his last set of ingredients. [break][break]

Now, as far as he was concerned, Paldean cuisine made for some of the best eats in the whole damn world. After a childhood spent relishing in his mother's own cooking and a handful of years spent bussing tables at her cafe, Eddie had grown to truly appreciate the food native to his region. It wasn't all sandwiches and paella, after all; it was the hearty and comforting fabada, or the sweet and rich torrija, or the simple but homey tortilla de patatas (which someone else appeared to be cooking, Eddie noted with giddy delight). It was real food, stick-to-your-ribs sort of food, and it was food that brought Eddie a real sense of comfort and familiarity in what was still a somewhat unfamiliar land. [break][break]

It was a hell of a thing, Eddie realized as he returned to his work station and got to work chopping some russet potatoes. He'd been in Hoenn, what, seven months? And his life had changed so much in that short amount time. [break][break]

Eddie gently dropped the cubed up spuds into a pot of boiling water before fishing them out a couple of minutes later to cool. It was bizarre to think that this time last year he had just started to give serious thought to his exodus from Cascarrafa, determined to do something with his dead-end life, be something after years spent spinning his wheels. [break][break]

The potatoes went for a swim in another pot, this one full of hot oil, while Eddie went to work making the second and final component of the dish. Sure, he may have gotten a little more than he had bargained for when he moved, between being snatched from the jaws of death by back in the Giant Chasm, to his prismatic imprisonment alongside , to the harrowing clash with Regice in Dewford, but as Eddie mixed together the salsa brava, made just the way his mother taught him to some twenty or so years ago, the construction worker-turned-soldier didn't think he'd change much of anything. [break][break]

It was all worth it for the purpose he had found, and it was all worth it for the friends that he had made. That was something Eddie was certain of as he dressed the crispy potatoes with his mother's prized Scovillan sauce and presented his dish for the judges (with plenty to spare for his own and other contestant's snacking, if they so chose). [break][break]

Patatas bravas, or spicy potatoes; the first dish he had ever learned to make, and a little slice of his old home that Eddie could share with all of the friends he had made in his new home. [break][break]

Thankfully, the ambassador did manage to score well on her Kalosian dish, so this round had Paldean food to make. From what she knew of the country’s cuisine, there were many foods that could be a good way to impress the judges. Her bulbous headed companion looks over the counter while Elise started to bring out several cold tortillas to toast as the diplomat prepared to cut up chicken pieces from the chicken breast after she cooks the chicken breast in an iron skillet, covered in canola oil.[break][break]

Charles helps with bringing the lime wedges, pico de gallo, and the avocado pieces from a little basket. “Thank you, Charles.” A smile comes upon the young purple-haired woman’s face and she’ll take out the tortillas since they’re all toasted and warm. Together, the princess and her hare king work together in placing the chicken first in the tortillas and then the other ingredients like the pico de gallo, avocado pieces, and the lime wedges. [break][break]

With guacamole sauce as a condiment inside the tacos, they were all placed on each plate for the judges. “Here you go.” Elise sets aside a plate of the chicken taco for the Calyrex shard to eat while she gives the plates of her chicken tacos over to the judges too. “It’s an easier recipe than my last. Chicken tacos are my favorite when I get Paldean takeout at the taco place as well.”[break][break]

And thus the final round approached. As Elaine's last dessert had been a solid success, she decided the best way to go through with this would be to go with what had already worked. She hadn't been too familiar with Paldean desserts. The first thing that came to mind was Flan.

The next thing that came to mind was the ice cream sandwich, though Elaine was 95% sure that such a thing didn't count. Hell, she was sure there would be many a Paldean who would have been willing to chuck her into the Giant Chasm for even thinking that, let alone trying to make that a reality.

So, this time, she had come up with something else that Jeanne could help with. With Jeanne focusing on getting the fruits ready for the apricorn jam, Elaine prepared the actual pastry part of it. After placing the jam atop the finished pastry, she placed a bit of whipped cream on and spread it around.

After rolling it up and spreading another thin layer of jam atop it, Elaine placed the remnants of the jam along with some remnant berries. She had never cooked this dish before, but she had remembered when she first tasted it at a Paldean restaurant before. Before passing it on to the judges, she cut a piece out and passed it onto Jeanne.

A hunter though she was, she did have quite the sweet tooth.

El smiles bright as the Pokepuffs are a hit - and is sure to set a share of them aside, for the other contestants' pokemon. Sharing was caring!

Paldea... The region home to the namesake to the Great Chasm and Area Zero here in Hoenn. There was a wide variety of foods - and though sandwiches were absolutely an iconic part of the region, they wanted to go for something a little different... Namely, croquetas! "Let's get some frying oil, Bibidi!"

They could be stuffed with a number of things - though they wanted to do some meat and cheese, here, with a sauce on the side. Maybe a variety of sauces? They'd have to see! They wondered if something like spinach and cheese would taste good...
Coquettas with dipping sauce, and referencing how Hoenn's Area Zero + Great Chasm are named after Paldea's own.

Fenelle lets out a breath of relief as the jury reacts incredibly well to the flammkueche. Seems like that snobby De Laurierwylle house might actually have done something right regarding cuisine there ... too bad no one will ever give up that family recipe, either.

The mention of Paldea reminds dem of Area Zero, Hoenn's very own one. Dee hasn't been tooo often there, but each time for sure has been memorable ... and incredibly dangerous to the boot. Still, these thoughts are worth nothing in the cooking contest, so dee hurries to get started on der final dish of the day.

Dee decides to now finally close it off with a proper baked dessert, something sweet to finish. Pastéis de nata are among der favourite desserts in general, the custard with the flaky dough just making a delightful combination. The movements for this almost go automatically, and Magnemite, too, seems to be in a very good mood after the previous round and now that they come to something very well known, low stakes.

Or high stakes, maybe, as it's the finale and actually messing up something that dee does so often would kinda hurt.

He had swayed from the grand design of fried food in the last round, and had paid for it deeply. For the final round, Alba needed to fry deeper than he had ever deep fried before… Deeper than the Giant Chasm that had yawned open, months ago.[break][break]

Okay well actually, churros were more of a ‘normal amounts of frying’ dish, but spiritually he would be frying them in the fires of Hell. In the… fires of Hell that cooked food well. In the— okay this analogy was terrible, and he needed to focus up on beating everyone in this contest.[break][break]

“Musharna, can you focus on shaping these?” They needed to get fancy with these churros; the perfect crunch with the perfect sugar dusting, twisted into 3d spirals… You had to get ambitious with the final course, right? As long as everything could hold under the weight…

About that time, Hati wandered back over, stuffed to the gills after actually allowed her to eat at his station... but there was always more food! As excited as she had been while exploring Area Zero, the little Eevee hopped over to 's table to try and munch on whatever he was cooking. She was not polite about this.[break][break]

Tempest knew just what to make, at least! It would really come down to the wire, so he hoped it would turn out... soon he had a large pan filled with bubbling, savory sauces, rice, and a pretty pattern of various fish. A yummy seafood paella! While not exactly the same, his family had made something similar growing up.[break][break]

"Ta-da!" He said when taking the lid off to the judges.

But it was totally fine! They could still knock it out of the park - he was sure of it. After all, their last dish had turned out way more decent than the first one. That okonomiyaki could be thrown like a frisbee straight into the great chasm at this rate.[break][break]

"We've done vegetarian dishes all the way through, and we're not gonna stop now!" he declared, marching the psyduck up to the station to gather veggies for a fourth time. "nothing too extravagant, though." Lam plopped onions and different colored bell peppers in her basket as he plucked up jars of spice and the things needed to make a good dough.[break][break]

"this is kind of like a pizza, but it's own thing." He dumped the contents in his arms out over the counter and set to mixing them into a dough mixture. Peaches wasn't exactly good at kneading the sticky ball of dough once it had come together, but she was helpful and it was terribly cute, at least.[break][break]

Once it was tucked up into a covered bowl to proof for a little while, he set to slicing up the onions and peppers into thin pieces. He sniffled, poorly avoiding the sting of the onion and the consequential weepies. Helpful as ever, the psyduck blotted his face with a spare rag. Then he dumped them into a pan to sauté into a nice, soft caramelized state.[break][break]

While the oven heated, Lam grabbed the dough again and set to tossing it. He worked a smaller piece loose for Peaches to attempt on her own - a secondary little mini coca for her. Then when it was thin enough, he added the toppings along with some paprika. "Nice n' simple!" he declared as it slid into the oven.[break][break]

Hopefully not to be overcooked before he eventually pulled it free and plated it nicely for presentation. "Maybe this'll be the one!" Peaches quacked out an agreement - confident in their handiwork.

“Finally, some good fucking food.”

He holds himself back from smacking the wide, flat frying pan down.

Striga set about deveining and detailing a parcel of shrimp as Bash added olive oil and almost a full head of diced garlic to the pan. Letting that sizzle, he zested and juiced three lemons and chopped a bunch of parsley.

“You have to add enough garlic for them to smell it in Area Zero.”

He threw everything into the super hot pan and began dusting in hot paprika from a shaker. After a beat, he made a face, pulled the fun stopper off, and then dumped a whole bunch in.

“If you can feel your tongue when it’s done you’re doing it wrong.”

He let the garlicy-paprika oil simmer with the herbs and began to remove chunks of thick, crusty bread. At the last moment, he added the shrimp, and let them sizzle for juuust a beat, so they wouldn’t over cook. Then he removed the pan from the heat and spooned the mixture into the center of the small breadbowls.

“Gambas al Ajillo. Paldean-style. Which means on bread, baby.”

EXPOSITION



THE STEEL CHEF 2024 COOKING CONTEST IS CONCLUDED! The announcement of the final round being themed after Paldean cuisine invites both excitement and puzzlement. There's a vast array of choices, after all, from the very basic to the richly traditional or complex. But the sound of sizzling olive oil and the scent of frying onions and peppers soon fill the air.[break][break]

One by one, the contestants bring their final dishes to be judged. The judges solemnly sample each dish, note down their pros and cons, and assess a score. Then, they quietly confer amongst themselves for a while.[break][break]

While they are professional and discreet, , who is eventually called over to hear the result, isn't nearly enough of either. "Wait! What?" the contestants hear her exclaim in a low voice. "He's... Are you sure? That doesn't... But if you say so..."[break][break]

Finally, while the contestants watch, the redhead takes a deep breath, draws herself up straight, and walks to the front of the kitchen. "Contestants!" she begins. "Thank you all so, so much for signing up and participating so enthusiastically in this contest. Really, I can't thank you all enough.[break][break]

"I always love hosting these wonderful events and seeing what everyone comes up with. And this time, you didn't disappoint! You guys are what make this contest so special and memorable every year. And I hope I can continue to keep hosting this for a few more years to come."[break][break]

Then, after skeptically side-eyeing the group of poised and unperturbed judges one last time, Aurelie continues, "Of the final dishes, the judges loved the classic seafood paella from and the amazing Catalan coca created by , as well as 's baked...and I hope I'm saying this right...Brazo de Gitano.[break][break]

"However, a contest doesn't just need winners for a round! It needs an overall victor! And I'm pleased to announce the most successful chef this time...and the Steel Chef of 2024...is..." She takes another deep breath, looks each contestant in the eye, and states, "Howard Slayte!"[break][break]

Triumphant music plays, and the ceiling opens to reveal a flood of descending balloons decorated with a map of all the world's regions. Aurelie shakes her head and smiles quizzically before walking toward and handing him the Clever contest ribbon with a pat on the shoulder.[break][break]

"Second place goes to , and third to . Congratulations to all of you for your wonderful work!"[break][break]

"And again, thank you all for being here. I hope you enjoyed your time here and the chance to test your culinary skills. And I hope you all never stop cooking, learning, and improving your skills in the kitchen and in life!"


SETTING



THE STEEL CHEF COMPETITION KITCHEN



ALL CONTESTANTS have been brought into a large warehouse near the Lilycove City harbor reserved for the occasion. Inside the warehouse, you find yourself within a high-ceilinged, cavernous kitchen space equipped with numerous rows of prep and cooking stations, one for each chef to use.[break][break]

Each prep and cook station features a gleaming stainless-steel countertop, stainless steel sink, gas stove, and electric oven. At the front of the kitchen is the presentation area, where the judges will sit together at a long table when tasting and appraising the contestants' dishes.[break][break]



A hallway to one side of the kitchen leads to the equipment room and pantry, which contain all the materials, cookware, and ingredients that contestants might need. Planter boxes line one wall of the pantry, filled with fresh herbs and greens that chefs can harvest and use in their dishes.[break][break]

The rest of the pantry is filled with shelves, refrigerators, and bins of fresh produce, meat, seafood, spices and seasonings, dairy, breads and grains, and kitchen staples (eggs, salt, sugar, flour, butter, several different types of cooking oil, cooking wine, and more) to help chefs bring their unique concoctions to life.[break][break]

  • Each round will feature a prompt to fulfill.
  • Each contestant must post once per round and make a roll at the end. If you miss a round, you won't be disqualified, but your chances to win will be lower. The roll will represent the judges' opinion of the contestant's dish.
  • At the end of the contest, the contestant with the highest roll total will be the winner. Therefore, please add up all your rolls at the end of each post.
  • Winning the contest will give your character a Clever Pokemon Contest win.
