Since some people were ahead of her in the leaderboard, the contestants were asked to make a salad or soup with the ingredient of shellfish or seashells in the dish or part of the presentation. The second part of the requirement was to show off the skill of using a knife which could be easy for someone who was good at cutting up vegetables. The woman knew what to do for her dish since clam chowder was a dish served at her mother’s home whenever they made it for a night with friends.[break][break]

Cooking the bacon and setting the strips aside, she chopped up the bacon into some little bits once they cooled down with a knife on the cutting board. Putting the bits into the small glass bowl, she cut pieces of celery and onions to put into the mixture of flour and chicken broth in the pot to cook for 2 minutes. Adding the butter garlic sauce into the soup, the next thing to put into the soup was diced red potatoes to throw into the pot along with the onions, celery, and bacon bits.[break][break]

Adding the finishing touches of fresh chopped clam into her clam chowder and clam juice for the flavor to be more bold, Elise poured a bowl of Clampearl Chowder for the judges to have a taste. "I do hope the Clampearl Chowder will be a fine dish to taste this time. I have worked to the utmost perfection for it." Her words introduced her mother's recipe to the judges and the audience.[break][break]

Skyler seems as shocked as anyone else that her dish had been considered fit for human consumption, and she’s downright dazed that the judges had actually considered it one of the best that round. For a moment she looks around, waiting for someone to announce faulty results or the coming of the apocalypse, but alas the contest continues uninterrupted.

Was this the start of a brilliant culinary career?!

Better yet, had she bested and Sammy?

She whips around to face Angelo with the most shit-eating grin on her face, and all the mustered smugness of one who had come out on top and wasn’t afraid to rub it in his face. “Don’t worry, Angel baby. I’m sure you’ll be able to catch up.” Her tone seems to imply otherwise.

Dorado, on the other hand, has his chest puffed out and absolutely zero doubts that his beloved captain would come out victorious. With a little sneaky help on the side, of course. But what were they if not pirates? And pirates weren’t afraid to play dirty.

Now, Skyler had never made a soup or a salad in her life. She’d stopped at omelets and had scarcely ventured into other things lest her kitchen implode in on itself, and her in it. Which was mildly problematic, but certainly not a reason for her to give up. What was a salad if not vegetables thrown together? And a soup was the same, with added water.

Fully confident in her reasoning, Skyler brings back a veritable collection of assorted vegetables and starts chopping away. The water is boiling and she shoves it all in with a handful of salt that slaps against the water’s surface with far too much aggression.

Dorado’s claws unsheathe with gleeful enthusiasm, gleaming metal slashing aggressively at an unfortunate lobster to release its juicy meat. Jagged bits of lobster shell fly everywhere, some landing on Skyler’s hair and cheek, though she hardly seems to acknowledge it.

In the lobster goes. And for some reason there’s eggs too?

Why are they green again?

Someone please stop her.

Regardless, the soup eventually reduces to a bizarre, unexplainable purplish hue. Skyler tops it off with cheese – because who doesn’t like cheese?

The captain leans back, satisfied with her frankensteined creation. She looks as if she’s just survived a wrestling match with a Muk: there’s nearly as much soup on her vest as there is on the bowl itself. But she high fives Dorado and presents the honestly terrifying looking dish to the judges for evaluation.

So far so good. Her first dish had been accepted, even if another contestant came up with the same dish.

But that didn’t matter, all that mattered was the result. Johanna had to focus, she had to provide the best possible entertainment for the crowd, hoping that it might draw some attention to her.

Luckily the next challenge sounded easy enough. How could she possibly mess up a Salad? And so she went to work trying to make Shellfish Salad with lime & Chilli dressing that required no more than four easy steps. Minus all the pre-prep, for some reason nobody ever counted that.

She grabbed green prawns, Lemon-grass, Scallops, Black mussels, Fresh lime juice. And Red birdseye chili which she deseeded and sliced as finely as she possibly could. Though admittedly she did not hold the skills that those FURY CUTTER Pokémon could. As well as a whole host of other ingredients.

And then, only then could the proper cooking begin.

She half filled a large saucepan with water. Before she HM01’d with great care the lemon grass into three pieces.

Once that was done, she placed the lemon grass in the water and brought it to a boil over high heat. Once satisfactory, she reduced the heat to medium.

She then added the prawns and cooked them until they had been cooked through. Taking a slotted spoon, she used that to transfer the prawns into a heatproof bowl.

She then brought the water back to a boil, added the scallops and cooked for 2 minutes. With another slotted spoon she transferred the scallops to the bowl with the prawns. Then, she drained half the liquid from the pan and brought the remaining liquid to the boil.

Another ingredient was added, this time the mussels which she cooked for 5 minutes before transferring the open mussels to a heatproof bowl, tipping any liquid in the shells back into the pan. She discarded any unopened mussels. Before setting it all aside to cool slightly.


With that done, she began to remove half the shell from each mussel using a small sharp knife to loosen the mussels in the remaining shells.

Lastly she began on all the other stuff. She whisked together the lime juice, chilli, garlic, oil, fish sauce and sugar in a small jug. Before she divided the lettuce, prawns, scallops, mussels and oysters among large serving plates. She then drizzled it all with dressing and sprinkle it with coriander.

The moment Isaac the Bewear could see the dish had been finished. He stood ready, grabbing the plate and walked it to the judges like a true butler. Leaving Johanna behind as she stood panting and tired.

Who knew cooking could be so hard.

Poor idiots, he thinks as he watches the judges ignore their instincts to flee at the sight of 's first monstrosity of the day. They won't make it 'till morning. 

Arms folded as he leans back against his station with confident nonchalance, Angelo awaits the sound of retching and the thud of a body meeting the floor. 

Only death doesn't greet the judges. They take a bite out of his wife's cooking and just...

Walk away...? 

Angelo watches them go onto the next station with a crease of confusion between his brow, waiting the sway of queasiness. But it never comes. They didn't look constipated in the slightest. 

What the fuck?  

Sammy looks up at him with a crinkly green face, looking nervously perplexed about what had just happened. He buries his confusion beneath an unfazed grin, throwing it towards Skyler.

Alright, Dross. Which judge did you bribe?” Or threaten, most likely. 

There is little time to consider that his adventures into the rifts may have spat him out into the wrong universe. It's soup time. 

Replacing confusion over the weird blip with focus, Angelo and Sammy set to work. Soon, a thick broth bubbles, red rich with passata, wine and chilli that drifts warm over the station. 

While the Gulpin dillegently sets about cleaning clams and mussels for the cacciucco, Angelo faces down the bulk of the ingredients. He twirls the blade once in his fingers, out of habit, before it descends in a rhythm of chops.

Slashing into the onion, celery and fish with a sharp eyed focus, it's all then thrown into the pot and left to simmer. Flavours of the seafood, shellfish and vegetables blending together into a comforting mix.

Sammy sprinkles parsley over the top once its done, looking quite pleased - and hopeful - with what they'd whipped up. 

Confidence not yet bruised, Angelo serves up the cacciucco with the belief that 's last verdict had been a fluke.

Wait, that...worked?[break][break]

It worked! Somehow, the pair had managed to pull off an almost perfect dish! Luka can't help her little cheer of excitement when the scores are announced, and Helios even returns the high five she eagerly offers him.[break][break]

She hopes that they can pull this momentum into the next round, whatever it might be. But luckily when it comes to soup, Luka knows exactly what to do. Well— kind of. She has a better idea of it, anyways. Her father's bouillabaisse was always one of her favorite dishes, and it just makes sense to present it here with the assistance of his former partner.[break][break]

Of course, it'll be Helios doing most of the heavy lifting this time as well...[break][break]

The traditional Kalosian soup is usually made with fish and other shellfish, but they'll be going with lots and lots of vegetables this time around. Luka makes sure to grab a few sheets of nori though, to still give her soup the 'taste of the sea', or something like that. What else might do it? Sea salt...sea cucumbers? She makes a grab for them before realizing that they definitely aren't plants. In fact, they look pretty gross.[break][break]

Armed with her sea-themed spoils and plenty of veggies, Luka makes it back to her station and starts to chop everything up with Helios' help. Her knife skills aren't the best, but she tries to slice and dice as finely as she's able. Somehow, even though Blaziken don't really have thumbs, Helios manages much better. He juliennes a carrot with ease, dices onion like a pro, and even tosses a bulb of fennel in the air to expertly slice in half.[break][break]

With everything prepped (and after Luka's bandaged up several cuts on her fingers from shoddy knife work), the soup easily comes together. Helios remains in charge of the cooking and seasoning, though he allows Luka to taste while she's not busy with the presentation.[break][break]

This is where she really shines— the woman is all about aesthetics! A large, decorative Clamperl shell becomes the base of the dish, it's shell deep enough to hold a generous helping of the soup. In the center, Luka places a small ramekin of aioli to go with the bread Helios prepared as a side, which shines like a pearl inside of the shell.[break][break]

As soon as the soup is ready, Luka carefully ladles it into the shell and garnishes it with a few more decorative shells and herbs before presenting it to the judges.[break][break]

"This is our take on a traditional Kalosian fish soup— and one of my favorite dishes from childhood. Even though we aren't using meat, you'll still get a taste of the sea with every bite! Please enjoy!"[break][break]

EXPOSITION



The knives come out in this round of the competition, as finely sliced salads and delicious, tempting soups are the next order of the day. The judges watch with varying expressions of awe, amusement, and sometimes dismay as the enthusiastic chefs start working. and his Pokemon's teamwork especially impress the judges, who watch wide-eyed as the two oscillate a mezzaluna blade back and forth with perfect synchronicity and harmony.[break][break]

Of course, not all the contestants display equal amounts of enthusiasm, as some chefs fail to submit completed dishes for the third round despite their best efforts. It's certainly not an easy competition, after all, and requires a fair amount of perseverance and tenacity from the chefs.[break][break]

Of those, is certainly not one of the stragglers, whipping up a delicious Clauncher egg drop soup that delights the judges' taste buds and lights up the scoreboard with an eye-catching high score. also impressively redeems himself this round with his Clauncher frutti di mare rice salad, assembled together with impressive speed and precision. 's terrifying-looking purple-green lobster vegetable soup monstrosity draws gasps of genuine horror from the judges, but after a few sips, they actually seem...approving? A reaction that seems to surprise them as much as everyone else watching, including Captain Dross herself.[break][break]

After the judges' final scores flash on the scoreboard, the spotlight swivels back toward , catching her sneaking furtive sips of the cacciucco, Clamperl chowder, the spicy Clauncher shrimp soup, and the Clauncher egg drop soup. The poor hostess flushes a bright, embarrassed red and hastily drops her spoon, before hurrying to the front of the kitchen.[break][break]

"Well, those soups definitely passed my taste test!" she announces cheerfully, flashing a self-deprecating smile at the contestants. "And I definitely enjoyed watching you all work your magic in the kitchen. I hope you're all enjoying the knives that I hand-crafted specifically for this competition too!"[break][break]

Aurelie flashes a thumbs-up and grins broadly, clearly unable to restrain herself from adding in a cheesy product-placement tie-in. "Because when you want a sharp edge over your competition, the Iron Lady Forge is the way to go! Right?"[break][break]

Then she clears her throat and attempts to regain her dignity for the second time in as many minutes. "But this certainly isn't the end of the contest! There's still two more rounds to go before we're done here. And the next round is..."[break][break]

The red-haired smith pauses dramatically for a moment, before continuing, "The entree round! Or the main dish round, if you prefer. The theme for your main dish or entree must be SURF AND TURF! Let's combine the best of land and sea into one fantastic dish for the judges."[break][break]

Nodding sagely at all of you, Aurelie then glances up at the clock on the wall. "All right, and your time starts... Now! Allez cuisine!"


SETTING



THE STEEL CHEF [break]COMPETITION KITCHEN


ALL CONTESTANTS are now cooking inside the high-ceilinged, cavernous kitchen space, which is equipped with numerous rows of prep and cooking stations. Each prep and cook station features a gleaming stainless-steel countertop, stainless steel sink, gas stove, and electric oven. At the front of the kitchen is the presentation area, where the judges will sit together at a long table when tasting and appraising the contestants' dishes.[break][break]



A hallway to one side of the kitchen leads to the equipment room and pantry, which contain all the materials, cookware, and ingredients that contestants might need. Planter boxes line one wall of the pantry, filled with fresh herbs and greens that chefs can harvest and use in their dishes.[break][break]

The rest of the pantry is filled with [shelves, refrigerators, and bins of fresh produce, meat, seafood, spices and seasonings, dairy, breads and grains, and kitchen staples (eggs, salt, sugar, flour, butter, several different types of cooking oil, cooking wine, and more) to help chefs bring their unique concoctions to life.[break][break]

The terms of the entree stage dictated that he would have to repurpose the meat he'd prepared for the Bouffalant Bourguignon for a something a bit more on the classic side. It was a shame, really. Not for Remiel, of course, he would simply make do with something else. Nevertheless, he truly lamented the flavorful ecstasy the judge's taste buds unknowingly missed out on.

It was at this time that Catalina's demeanor seemed to shift with undeniable focus and calm. She knew just as well as he that the entree was the centerpiece of every meal. This could make or break their chances of winning. So, without hesitation, the pair get to work the moment they are able to.

Remiel steams some vegetables and prepares the Bouffalant meat at his disposal, while his Ceruledge ancestor gets to cutting open the Crawdaunt tails in butterfly style. Both types of meat are carefully seasoned and cooked thereafter. As the heat and sweat emerge, however, the rich scents briefly drift the royal's mind into the haze of memory:

The shimmering ocean waves seem to slow and temper their strength with respect to the shores of CHALLENGE BEACH. The ISLE OF ARMOR was, indeed, a testament to strength itself. And it was here where Remiel practiced his swordsmanship with the renowned MASTER DAIKOKU.

Shirtless and raggedy-haired, the crown prince stood on the beach in a firm stance and executed the same slash over and over again. He was to do so until his muscles ached and the sun fell. Or, at least today, until his master emerged from the dojo nearby with a plate of grilled Magikarp and some fresh lettuce.

Suddenly, the fire erupts from beneath the pan of searing meat with a ferocious roar, snapping him out of this memory in an instant. The sleeve of Remiel's ensemble catches flame afterward, but the man displays ironclad calm as he simply tears open the buttons with a sharp tug and removes the entire article of clothing. It wasn't the first time he'd been burned. That much was obvious by the scars on his now exposed torso. Or, at least, the skin that wasn't covered by his tank top.

Had he accidentally let some oil and meat fat spill from his pan? No, that hadn't been it. Was the stove he'd been using faulty? Perhaps. But he doubted such a finely run competition would allow that sort of thing to go unchecked. So the only plausible explanation he found delved into the territory of sabotage. Or, worst yet, attempted assassination.

He peers into the crowd, looking for a familiar face he might have passed in the pressurized halls of the Team Rocket submarine. When an attendant brings him another chef's top to wear, however, he stops and places it on before finishing his plate. Before long, he presents it to the judges.

"Bouffalant Steak and Crawdaunt Tail on a bed of jasmine rice and seasoned vegetables. Bon appetit."

One did not usually think of "surf and turf" in Kantonese cooking, but that wasn't going to stop Zev. Taking inspiration from hibachi steakhouses, he and Ambipom picked out Miltank steak, fresh Shellder meat, and an assortment of vegetables from the pantry.[break][break]

Zev had little time to think of anything but his recipe, but cleaning the Shellder meat did invoke MEMORIES of his most recent deep sea dive with . Far under the surface of the ocean, Zev had spied Shellder and Cloyster lurking amid the rocks of the leviathan's lair.[break][break]

That night, he had experienced true fear for the first time — and he hated it with every fiber of his being.[break][break]

Suppressed the shudder that threatened to pass through him, Zev started cooking the steak and seafood. Shellder meat had to be cooked thoroughly, but cook it too much and it became rubbery. As for the steak, he aimed for medium rare.[break][break]

In the meantime, Ambipom chopped and stir fried the vegetables: bok choy, three types of mushrooms, carrots, ginger, and lotus root. Soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, and garlic brought a sweet saltiness to the mixture.[break][break]

When everything was done and the steak had rested for a few minutes, Zev cut it up into bite-sized pieces and arranged the surf and turf stir fry on plates, each one accompanied by a small bowl of freshly steamed white rice. Proud of his concoction, he presented these to the judges with Ambipom's assistance.[break][break]

After the third round’s dishes were tasted by the judges, it was time for the fourth round to give her another chance to try to come up with something new. All of the contestants were told to make a main dish out of ingredients from the land and sea, a surf and turf kind of dish. Taking out the saute pan onto the cooking counter, she combined all of the poaching ingredients of white wine, chicken stock, and water. Along with reducing the heat to medium-low and placing the salmon in liquid, she covered the fish in the poaching liquid for 7 minutes before refrigering for 15 minutes after taking it out of the liquid.[break][break]

Onto the croquette making, she began to remove the skin from the salmon and did the steps to pan fry the round salmon pieces in breaded almond meal flakes with a topping of lemony remoulade sauce. For the turf part of her dish, she roasted the garlic to turn it into a paste for the steak and cooked her seasoned rib eye steak to smear the garlic paste onto each of the four steak pieces. Her last part of her dish would be making the hazelnut scalloped potatoes to serve with her steak and salmon croquettes as she began to cook them until they were ready with a sprinkle of hazelnut and paprika mixture over them to serve with her surf and turf dish. She gave a plate of her dish to the judges with her shiny Fennekin’s mouth watering for the food.[break][break]

[attr="class","skullbody"]Surf and turf, huh? Now that wasn't going to be easy. Surf and turf was basically already the art of making two meals. It was also so much protein in one dish that you typically needed a side or two to balance things out. Even with the ability to casually tell time and space to fuck off, this was going to be hard.[break][break]

First priority was making a marinade fit for some nice, tender Miltank steaks. As Miyuki fetched the rest of their ingredients, Isaac tossed together soy sauce, water, oil, brown sugar, garlic, and cayenne pepper into a bowl, whipping it into a quick marinade for coating his steaks. He set up some rice in a rice cooker beside it, letting his base meat and base carb handle themselves.[break][break]

The second he finished, it was time for chopping once more. Miyuki warped him to the knife station while she kept an eye on the rice cooker. From there, it was go time; like a man possessed he diced up a mango, a pineapple, some green onion, and some bell pepper. Some of this he set aside to marinate with some lime juice, but he was going to need the rest for his actual recipe.[break][break]

He hit the mango with some grated ginger, sweet chili sauce, rice vinegar, lime juice, and basil, then slid it over to Miyuki. The fox levitated it into a blender, then pawed it on to reduce the mix into a smooth, creamy dipping sauce. As she did this, Isaac beat two plates of eggs worth into submission. One plate was used to coat flour-dusted Skrelp, before they were smothered in panko breadcrumbs and sweet coconut. While this topping settled, the other eggs went in the pan, quickly setting and just as quickly scrambling.[break][break]

The remaining pineapple and red pepper hit the pan next. While they started to brown, Isaac diced some miniature cucumbers, carrots, and greens into matchsticks. Avocado slices and some chopped mint and clinantro quickly joined them. There was no time to stop. No time to rest. The second Miyuki warped him from a cook station to a prep station, he needed to act.[break][break]

He remembered his oceanside dive with , when the promise of tapping into great potential left him drowning beneath the waves. Funny how history repeated. While the drown was metaphorical this time, the pressure deep inside his chest and ticking of the clock were no less real.[break][break]

Ding. The rice cooker was done, just in time for the pineapple to finish. Isaac swapped the fruit out for some crushed peanuts, then scooped the rice in once they toasted. With his fried roce coming along nicely, he was in the endgame now. Not a moment too soon; the clock was ticking down, the water pressure was rising, and yet he still had yet to free himself.[break][break]

A gentle, barely-there Heat Wave from Miyuki kept the rice warm as Isaac took his marinated steaks and put them on the grill. Steak finished cooking itself when off heat. Shrimp, if left on heat, turned into a rubbery mess. It was better to start with steak. He did it just how he liked it, with a pat of butter, a nice sear, and some good, rare meat on the inside.[break][break]

As the steak cooked, he turned to his slices, wrapping them up nice and secure in some freshly wet rice paper. With how meaty of a meal he'd made, these spring rolls were a sweet, easy, bar food inspired vegetable component. Silently, he was glad he picked a variety that didn't need to fry. He'd probably go crazy if he had to add a fourth cooked component to the meal.[break][break]

By now, he surrendered flipping and plating to Miyuki. She could handle all that with her Psychic as he wrapped these rolls to perfection. He arranged them into a little pyramid, then dusted them with any remaining crushed peanuts. Just in time. The steak was done, now proudly laid beside the spring roll pyramid. He took his pineapple-mango salsa and dolloped a little bit atop the steak. The second he finished, a timer went off. The shrimp. Isaac hastily scooped it into the crook between the steak and egg rolls, putting a little cup of the blended mango dipping sauce on the remaining plate space.[break][break]

Where would the fried rice go, then? With mere seconds to spare, Isaac spooned it into the shell of the pineapple he'd used. It was a nice, visually stunning sendoff to this entire tropical feast.[break][break]

Isaac was no steely-disciplined master like . He was no free-flowing artist like . But he was a quick learner, fueled by the influence they had on his life, and he was hellbent on making them proud.[break][break]

Not a moment too soon. The timer went off. The day was done. Isaac damn near fainted, enjoying the rush of oxygen as his head breached past the metaphorical waters.[break][break]

He'd done it. And he was proud.[break][break]

Skyler is as surprised as anyone else that her dish was considered one of the best in the round - for the second time in a row. She scratches her head, beffuddled, and turns to an innocent-looking (nevermind that he'd tampered with 's dish not once, but twice), wide-eyed Dorado. "The fuck is happening?"

She thought that her cooking was just fine, but everyone else who stood within fifty feet of it usually held a vastly contrasting opinion. Followed by retching. Or, if brave enough, food poisoning.

Honestly, the ship captain had expected to be kicked out halfway through on account of something like, say, toxic fumes or arson. Probably both - at the same time. Say what you want about Skyler Dross, but she doesn't do half measures.

She finds herself meeting 's eyes from across the room as he looks around, acting weirdly paranoid. Huh. For shits and giggles, Skyler makes sure to wink at him. It does give her untold joy that so far he's scored far, far below her.

Speaking of.

There's another presence in the room that probably does not care for her score. Or, rather, is incredulous of it. She'd be too (and is) had she witnessed all the countless times she'd nearly burned down the kitchen and traumatized poor Sammy. She peeks at her husband () from the corner of her eyes, but doesn't taunt him this time.

Her score is probably taunt enough.

Instead, she rushes to the kitchen to gather ingredients for - you guessed it - yet another one of her specialty dishes: a deconstructed egg sandwich! And by deconstructed she probably means arranging ingredients around so it looks like it's got goggly eyes. Glorious. Amazing. Brilliant.

Someone kick her out of this competition.

For her ocean ingredient, she's picked Pyukumuku pickles. She still remembers the one time one had straight up clocked her when her when she was a wee little girl, by the oceanside. She'd punched it back to the ocean, obviously, and made peace with it years later.

The aggressive, almost satisfied way she's slicing it begs otherwise. This time her Chansey eggs (her land ingredient) are a sulphuric pastel green, for reasons yet to be discovered. Or perhaps it'll remain a mystery for the ages.

"This is, uh," she points to the tiered sandwich of dubious viscosity, and which honestly looks more like a sad lasagna. On top are two wonky goggly eyes - it made it look as if it was begging them to end its misery. Also, where had the bread gone? "this is a Sea Monster Pickled Egg Sandwich." Her chest puffs out, proud of her abominable creation.

This is bullshit.” His tongue slips, loosened in incredulous alarm as, again, he watches all three judges walk away from 's presented dish, smiling and well. “The fuck is happening?”  

Angelo doesn't know what's more horrifying. That they're still on their feet or that they look happy about it... 

He's trying to rationalise the score difference (it had to be extortion, had to be) when a peek of silver hooks his attention, reeling him in. Angelo barely registers that his expression lacks the smugness and nonchalance it usually does when engaged in playful competition. 

Now his glare is a turbulent storm with her residing in the eye, shoulders squared back in defiance. Skyler would know the look. Its when the taunting ends. 

Everyone scatters then, the next round underway. 

Lost on the pilot is a paler Sammy, who wrings his once impressive toque nervously between his nubs. “It's not over yet, Sams.” Determinedly scooping up the Gulpin like a deflated beach ball under one arm, Angelo strides them both back to their kitchen station with a vengeance.  

The ingredients he gathers are old familiars from when he'd lived beneath his grandparent's roof. 

Polenta grains. Parmesan cheese grated in a bowl. Measured milk. Lemons thinly sliced. Lechonk prosciutto and clauncher, generously seasoned. 

But why have pleasant nostalgia of Alto Mare and its beautiful, winding canals? Of times spent as a child with his nonna in the kitchen, scents of earthy polenta, sunshine and the nomel berry tree tickling through the window?

When he could remember when had first attempted to poison him on the high seas before their earliest adventure. How the green, slimy eggs had been slyly tipped overboard into waiting Gyarados jaws. Volans had been sick for days. 

Hell would freeze before his pride allowed Skyler to win, not after all the cooking atrocities he'd seen over the years. 

Sammy tends to keeping the polenta creamy and smooth, ensuring it doesn't burn while Angelo sautés the land and sea ingredients. 

When they're finished, three plates are placed in front of the judges. Clauncher sit atop a bed of polenta, an accompanying aroma of parsley and lemon wafting beneath their noses. 

Lemon garlic clauncher and polenta, with lechonk proscuitto. Dig in.” Angelo smiles, not entirely forged. He's confident with how his dish came out.

The next round came to be. She took a moment to ponder what to offer the judges this time. Surf and turf was the theme.

It reminded her of that one time she was at the beach. She hadn’t been very old at the time, but it was one of the few times were she was given time to just be a normal kid trying to swim amidst other children and Pokémon.

She distinctly remembered having some rather commoner’ish dish afterward, perhaps that would do? But for a moment she could not remember the name nor the recipe. But as she dived deeper into the memory it all came to her and so she began to prepare the dish alongside her Pokémon helper.

Bacon-Wrapped Tuna Steaks with Frisée and Avocado Salad

Was the dish she was preparing. No better surf and turf, right?

First she laid the bacon strips on a cutting board and placed a piece of “tuna” in the center of each; seasoned it with salt and pepper. She then folded the bacon around the tuna and secured it with toothpicks.

She then grabbed a large nonstick skillet. In the large nonstick skillet, she heated one tablespoon of the olive oil until it shimmered. She then added the tuna and cooked it over moderately high heat, turning once, until the bacon was crisp and the tuna was still pink inside, so about 6 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a medium bowl she whisked the remaining two tablespoons of olive oil with the vinegar; season with salt and pepper. Toss in the frisée and avocados and transfer to plates.

She then removed the toothpicks from the tuna and cut each piece in half. Arrangeed the tuna over the frisée and serve it to the judges, drizzling any remaining dressing left in the bowl over the fish.

Beaten again. Damn, Ashley is having all the trouble in the world just keeping up with the top brass. There's no medal for fifth place, and for a moment, he almost feels dejected... he closes his eyes, putting his spatula down, and thinks as the next dish is decided. Surf'n'turf.[break][break]

Unova. Home. The streets of Castelia City. The grills within the city itself. He taps upon the counter. He always saw the chefs throwing the knives and making a show right by live catches on the beach, literally as he was there, enjoying a small thing of bread. What would go best here? Was there an answer? He would not be deterred. He had to win.[break][break]

His eyes flash with inspiration, as he looks to Bongo. Bongo and him share a fist-bump, and the duo are in the pantry again.[break][break]

Welcome to the power hour with Ashley and Bongo, the duo this time are grabbing garlic, olive oil, fresh parsley, some fresh minced thyme, a lemon, some green onions, cayenne pepper, butter, bread crumbs, and the main course; Clauncher tails and Tauros steaks. With their haul done, they quickly race back to the tabletop, and get to work.[break][break]

Skillet at the ready, Bongo holds it as Ashley begins doing the work, as 2 tablespoons of olive oil sautés the garlic. Ashley sets the timer. "Once it dings, off." 30 seconds tick by, as Ashley begins chopping up the green onions, and begins to zest a lemon, putting the onions, the parsley, the thyme, some salt and pepper, the cayenne pepper in a bowl. Once that timer goes off, Ashley gestures. "Garlic, in." Bongo does so, beginning using a wooden spoon to push it in. Once Bongo finishes, Ashley gets a half cup saved of the herby mixture.[break][break]

Next, butter. Some is soft, this is good. Ashley throws it into the herbs to mix it up into the small bowl, and he begins to shape it into... a log? Interesting.[break][break]

As he races towards the fridge, he shuts it.[break][break]

"We got maybe 35 minutes, Bongo. Let's roll."[break][break]

With the oven heating to 375°, Bongo begins to split the Clauncher tails with his gorilla strength, lengthwise, as Ashley mixes the reserved herby mixture with bread crumbs, and melted butter, setting it aside as he takes out scissors, beginning to cut along the edges of the Clauncher tails, to loosen the cartilage covering the tail meat. It can be healthy, but Ashley tosses it to the trash. Cartilage isn't necessary here. It's all about the necessary bits, baby.[break][break]

"Okay, baking sheet, Bongo." Bongo nods, and places the Clauncher tails gently, cut-side up, as Ashley begins coating the tail with that crumb herby topping. It was oven ready, and they still had to wait for the oven to be ready. But thankfully, the boys were ready.[break][break]

Now comes the Tauros steaks, and Ashley looks towards Bongo as he points to the pan. "Like we practiced, bud. Hold it over, make sure it's cooked medium-well done, okay?" Bongo salutes. He's in charge of the steaks, and Ashley with sprinkling the pepper over it. And with the remaining oil, those steaks are sizzilin' nicely as the oven goes off. Ashley puts the lobster tail in, and sets it to 18 minutes.[break][break]

He looks to the time. They got some time now, so it's all on Bongo. He places complete trust in the Rillaboom, as the picturesque scene of the gorilla flipping steaks over with a spoon adds a novelty to the whole endeavor. And for an agonizing fifteen minutes, the crowd watches on at a Rillaboom cooking steak.[break][break]

Ashley rolls up his sleeves. Game time.[break][break]

The moment that oven is off, the tails are removed from the oven by mitt, and the moment Ash checks the fridge, that herby butter log is solid. "Perfect." It seems that the judges weren't quite as impressed with her take on a fish-less fish soup. But no matter! There's still a few rounds left and Luka isn't going to let a little slip-up get her down.[break][break]

Besides, she's doing far better than she'd ever anticipated. Though she isn't delusional enough to think she might win this thing, having Helios at her side at least gives her a fighting chance.[break][break]

When it comes to surf-and-turf, her take is obviously a little different from everyone else's. But hey, lots of stuff that isn't meat lives in the land, and the sea! And she thinks (or at least hopes) that vegetarian sushi might be the perfect compromise.[break][break]

Her arms fill with loads of different groceries as she thinks of the best way to prepare this dish. Honestly she's winging it, but that's been her plan this entire time. And if it ain't broke, why bother fixing it?[break][break]

She hums cheerfully as she starts preparing vegetables to use as a filling. Roasted carrots kind of look like fish meat, and avocados are typical sushi fare too! She throws in some mango and red cabbage for color to one roll, and tomatoes that have been soaked in kelp powder in another. Tomatoes like to suck up flavors, so maybe they'll kinda taste fishy...[break][break]

Those leftover vegan shrimps from earlier get utilized too, just in case there's not enough surf to go with the turf. And just for fun (and presentation!) Luka cuts some of the vegetables into different shapes! Hearts, stars, the works. They'll look so adorable in a sushi roll— at least she hopes so.[break][break]

Helios, meanwhile, prepares the rice. He's long since figured out that his trainer is ill suited to cooking with fire, and would rather not let the entire contest kitchen burn down.[break][break]

While Luka cuts and chops and carves little carrot stars, her eyes wander to some of the other contestants. Inevitably they drift onto , and she can't help but reminisce about the times he'd cooked for her, even if she doesn't want to. The theme of the contest drags back other memories as well: walking barefoot on the beach after a contest win, splashing him with water and playing by the shore. The feeling of cool seawater on her skin and a warm flush to her face, the sand under her toes as they raced up the beach together. Her back against the sand, and—[break][break]

Her knife slips, and she hisses in pain as another shallow cut joins the others on her poor, bandaged fingers. But from then on, at least, Luka manages to focus properly.[break][break]

Rolling the sushi is a lot harder than anticipated. It's easy enough to lay everything out together, but when it comes to rolling everything, it turns into a hot mess in her hands. They're either squished too much and burst from their nori wrappers, or are too loose and everything just spills out![break][break]

After a lot of messed up attempts and a lot of frustration, three rolls are determined to be good enough. And with the clock winding down, there's really no time to do anything else! Luka once again utilizes presentation as a way to try and elevate her mediocre dish, this time decorating the platter of cut rolls with little edible flowers and elegant swirls of spicy mayo that vaguely resemble waves. That's...well, it's something, right?[break][break]

"I've always thought of sushi as a way for the sea to cradle the earth," she says as she presents her dish with a bashful smile. "They come together so delicately...you can experience the entire planet in a single bite. I hope you enjoy!"[break][break]
