CENTRAL MALL OF HORRORS

SLATEPORT'S CENTRAL MALL IS HOLDING A COSTUME CONTEST! Conducted within a large court inside the department store, a large stage and runway has been erected for costumed trainers and their Pokemon to parade across for the audience to revel in their spooky pageantry. Behind it, a thick black curtain hides contestants and sound equipment that play fun Halloween tunes.[break][break][break]

Above, floating among the many levels of this mall, ghost-type Pokemon haunt the air. Halloween garlands of paper-cut Littens, Gengar faces, and Noibat are strung between foundational pillars. A small fog machine putters away off to the side, assisted in part, by a Rotom-Fan.[break][break][break]

As Shoppers linger around the perimeter with interest or confidently seat themselves in the rows of foldable chairs, the master of ceremonies appears. Professor Pierce Creighton, a Rustboro Professor appears, dressed as a Geodude. "GREETINGS HALLOWED HOENNIANS. WELCOME TO THE SLATEPORT COSTUME CONTEST! A vampire lady in the crowd whistles, fingers in her mouth. Shouting excitedly, she is loud enough to interrupt the professor momentarily. "WE HAVE TERRIFYING TROUPE PREPARED FOR YOU TODAY, SO IF YOU WOULD JOIN ME IN WELCOMING OUR FIRST CONTESTANT WITH A HAIR-RAISING ROUND OF APPLAUSE!"[break][break]

Adrian has his Teddiursa tag along for a costume themed after a children's book from Galar, one that he and Serena were well acquainted with throughout their childhood: The story of a Teddiursa named... Paddington.

Adrian wears rather plain clothes for a Galarian gentleman, while his Teddiursa scoots along after him, the crumbs of its marmalade sandwich staining its cheeks.

Rowan stuck close to Adrian Malcolm and his Paddington Teddiursa, an entry of his own waddling alongside him. Mistral’s costume was inspired by an old cartoon he’d once seen called Steamboat Willie, starring the popular children’s character: [REDACTED].

Mistral was less than enthused, but Rowan happened to be particularly pleased with how the costume came out. At least one of them was having fun, right?

the costume contest was pretty much a tradition. not participating in it was a crime, and with it being the perfect excuse to dress up a pokemon, kyle takes the opportunity to torment one of his most obedient pokemon.

the corndog was fresh, so the fact that he hasn't ravaged it was a testament to the manectric's good conduct. one can say that he's trained for this moment. there was no one else more suited for the role besides him, especially since the corndog was important for the outfit.

Skyler's voice rises above the din of seated people, a herald to the hero that would soon grace them with her presence. "Ladies, gentlemen and non-binary folks, here we have the most galant hero in all the lands, unique among her kind! Prepare yourselves!"

Stepping aside with an overly dramatic gesture and a sweep of her cape, Skyler would reveal a Dewott clad in sparkling shiny armor. "LADY-KNIGHT SHOALGUN!" The pokemon's mouth would curl to reveal a sharp, toothy grin. Her sword is raised to catch the light, revealing it to be a real sword, as she strikes an appropriately hero-like pose.

Once she hears about the costume contest, Lyssa has been stressing out what kind of costume that she can use for her pokemon. Until she looks at Cosmo and a fictional character from a comic book, then everything clicks. Lyssa gallantly enters the contest followed by her Abra that hovering behind her with a white suit and blue undershirt underneath it and a red tie to complete it alongside a monocle that stays on his face due to the psychic power. Cosmo the abra is ready to perform either a magic trick or steal the audience's heart with his adorableness. [break][break]

While for Lyssa herself, she wears a similar outfit but with a blue suit on the top and a white undershirt, and instead of a monocle, she is wearing fake glasses. In that fictional comic book, the character that she is cosplaying is the archnemesis of what Cosmo cosplaying right now.

A single arrow struck the empty stage. Its shadow grew under the spotlight, dark wings slowly unfurling, until finally, in a rush of wind and feathers, Ju-Ju Phantom Forced onto the runway.

Robin Hood wasn’t the most original idea, and even the Decidueye seemed to be aware of that. He shot an exasperated look towards Locke and their Levanny behind him, before striking a few action poses for the audience.

(for context, here’s the argument they had prior to this insanity)

He had no idea how the fuck he was able to do this, however he knew it came at an extremely high cost.

For one thing, he had to go in costume too, just so people didn’t stare at what he was about to—

Never mind if the wolf ears sticking out of his head looked damned-ass realistic, and let’s not talk about the tail either; however fact of the matter was that he even had a fucking spiked collar on his neck, tucked underneath an old leather jacket he’d rescued and prettied up as best as he could manage.

This time, he’d abandoned the vape and was actually chilling with a singular cigarette; it… it was a ride trying to smoke again without the vape. It was hard, okay?!

Up above him—no, that wasn’t the iceborne deity that he was commonly associated with.

Was it—

A shiny Galarian Articuno?!

As Ro was hidden backstage while he was out front, using Telekinesis to give the impression that the angery, scary Galarian version of his iceborne mirage was literally making all the shit they passed on-stage levitate into the air.

After all…

The Galarian version of the deity was Psychic and Flying, not the original Ice and Flying that they were.

Izzy, very begrudgingly, took part today on the off chance that he might win a cash prize or something. It definitely had nothing to do with the frankly adorable costume his sweet little baby - uh, that was, his nasty little wire-chewing terror - had on. Myszko, the aforementioned baby terror, scuttled around the stage with Spinarak-style legs bouncing wildly from his back. Izzy couldn't help but get the costume when he'd seen that one viral video about the Growlithe in an Ariados costume scaring all those people. Plus, Arceus, it was soooo cute.[break][break]

As for Izzy himself... sweats and a t-shirt. He wasn't the one dressing up, c'mon, who d'ya think he is? What if someone from Rocket recognised him? He didn't wanna lose cred for dressing up as a catboy or whatever the hell people did nowadays.[break][break]

“Please stop messing with that” the scarred man growled, snapping his fingers to get her attention away from her costume “you’re going to ruin it.” The houndoom let out a small whine, eyes widen to give him the puppy eyes. The trainer scoffed, rolling his eyes. “No, I’m not taking it off. What until after.”

Speaking of that, it was there turn to shine. Strolling onto the stage together, the houndoom moved to the center. Taking in a deep breath, she let out a steady roll of flames roll out of the side of her mouth. Maverick beamed, feeling proud that he put that costume together. The colored fluffy strapped on her was to look like flames, hoping to make her look like a true hell hound.

Primarina was usually one who loved to live in the lime light for melody's concerts. However this time Melody had done something truly cursed, she had been watching a show cause bubaul's drag race where the contestants were men who would dress up as a woman. The lengths that these men went to imitate the appearance of a women truly amazed melody. So of course she wanted to try and do it justice! Of course, TRY was heavily emphasized..[break][break]
Children screamed and ran when they saw Melody's primarina dressed up in full drag attire, her eye was glitter out, her lips were glossed and her nails were in fact, POPPIN. However children could not truly appreciate the fine art Melody had made for them, and from the look of primarina's frown, neither could she.

As expected, Luka and her Pokemon are turning the shoujo meter up to 1000. She's fully decked out to match her Lopunny, matching Bonbon's adorable Chibiusa costume with a Sailor Moon cosplay of her own.[break][break]

"You look so cute," Luka gushes while Bonbon preens. Ribbons are fluffed, skirts adjusted— everything made picture perfect by the time they're called onstage. "You're going to do great out there!" she assures her partner, beaming at the shiny rabbit when their turn comes up.[break][break]

The two sailor scouts walk onstage, and one can almost imagine shoujo sparkles and flowers blooming all around them. Of course, Luka hangs back so that Bonbon gets all the attention, hopping around and showing off her cute costume gleefully.[break][break]

Black curtains parted and the fog machine did overtime as a massive, hulking shape appeared in the mists of the Slateport Department Store. Chryssa's Probobpass floated a foot off the runway, his blue rubber shoes barely skimming the carpet as the rock-type levitated forward.

Chryssa herself reclined in her Pokemon's arms, one of which fell off as they neared the audience and clattered to the linoleum. It was made of plastic. One of the Mini-noses detached itself and flew down to retrieve the lost limb, bringing it back to its mustached master like a loyal dog.

"I have nothing to say," Chryssa declared, lounging across her brown-painted Pokemon, "Except to remind everyone that all potatoes are, in fact, clones of their parent potato, and the same is true of Probopass. Thank you."

They drifted away again into the dry-ice-assisted nitrogen haze, their departure as simple, mysterious and beautiful as their entrance.

amoonguss (f) effect spore - feint attack, bide, sweet scent, clear smog

apparently, this costume is really popular among gamers, and that much becomes clear when his amoonguss isn't the only one wearing it. it is the only one in pink, though, so maybe that's a win for them.

matias looks out at the various outfits around them, focusing only on the ones that look similar.
