Calem had never ridden one of these things before in his life.

So why not try and do some of the hardest tricks?

A lot of people seem to be trying to Magikarp Splash, but he will try... Over the Gyarados. That seemed a lot more likely to happen with his abysmal skill than the other one.

I hate this.

After his last attempt had ended in failure, complete with panic as he was thrown off the Mantine's back and into the turbulent ocean depths, Gavin wasn't looking forward to trying again. But he's proud, and he doesn't want to quit without a fight.

Hopefully this time goes over a little better when they attempt the MAGIKARP SPLASH.

Their first jump is a success! Breathless and laughing, Luka high fives (high fins?) her Mantine and takes a moment to rest upon their broad back. The sun bakes down as water laps over her legs, and she's content to simply lie there a while until Mantine starts to wiggle. Apparently they're not fond of being idle for so long.[break][break]

Her heart is still racing, so this time they attempt something a little less challenging. The Lanturn 360 seems like a safe bet! Not too hard, though still rather fun. They wait for a high enough wave to try and perform it on...and off they go!

This Mantine has absolutely NO remorse at all. It’s the Mantine from HELL!

So after that hilarious wipeout (thank fuck the Mantine didn’t drop or let him out of their sight, because who knew that Mantine were sensitive to their human rider’s emotions, all that?!) he was… still hanging on for dear life.

“F-f-f-f-f-f-f-fuck!” he muttered, gasping for air as the dual-type surfaced from underwater, him spitting out salt water like an ~~angry~~ ~~angy~~ angery Purrloin who’d gotten unceremoniously doused.

“G-g-g-g-geez, give me a warning next time before you—” he was about to go on a full-blown tirade… when the Mantine, exactly the fucking Mantine he was riding on, shot off into the water again!

“W-w-w-w-w-WHAAAAAAAAAA!” he screeched at full volume—never mind if the entirety of the crowd heard him, never mind if Guillermo Marceliño himself heard that familiar sound—shot off at top speed ahead, determined to BREAK Alexei.

And break Alexei the Mantine will, in the form of a Magikarp Splash!

Truth be told, she'd been too nervous the first day to even try the surfing, afraid she'd somehow hurt herself in the process. Watching everyone else try it, though, and perform spectacular-looking tricks that first morning, she became increasingly curious and less afraid at the same time, until finally her courage and her curiosity overcame her.

Now, here she was after her first surfing lessons. Remembering the lessons that Angus had just drilled into her, Aurelie kept a wide stance, bent her knees, and spread her arms out to keep her balance. She urged her Mantine toward the highest waves, but when they neared the crest, she felt herself quailing.

Just a Lanturn 360! she decided. A back flip, front flip, and then a full 360 flip in the air is ambitious enough for now!

Okay. Barnaby's last attempt had been a bit of a flop. BUT. He had practiced some more since then, and was now ready to show off his newfound skills.

In reality these skills were still basically zero, but his hubris was notoriously unwavering, SO - it was time to try and perform the signature move of the competition.

The prior Mantine surfing had gone pretty well. So once more she took the reigns and climbed upon the water Pokémon. Setting out to cross the waves.

This time she found the large wave easier. Not wanting to test her luck as much as the last time she went for a safer trick. The STARMIE as it was called. It was nausea-inducing, and to be honest, when she landed she wasn’t sure if she had performed it right. But she’d tried to the best of her ability.

one just doesn't give up after a single try.

kyle goes for another attempt for the most difficult trick. doing anything else would be a disservice to the mantine surfing gods that would watch them have fun in the water.

worst case scenario was having to deal with a giant tentacruel at the beach again, all while having an ache from crashing into the waves.

After failing the last trick attempt, Zev's Mantine swam in a wide, graceful arc back out to the open ocean. He angled it toward an oncoming wave that looked like it might be perfect for attempting a MAGIKARP SPLASH. Zev narrowed his eyes at the size of the wave but urged the Pokémon forward, hoping for the best.

Ok, so he managed to land the Lanturn 360 by a... Pretty decent margin. Not bad, that was a good start. The blonde would shake a bit of water out of his hair as he took a deep breath while Mantine would begin to shoot into the air again. Right, what did the list say again? Up next should be the... Primarina Twist, right? It was still a pretty risky thing though, and his luck was never very good when he pushed it.

Fully expecting to end up submerged, the blonde held his breath and got to flippin'.
