IN EARLY JUNE, the picturesque seaside city of Slateport jittered with energy. Today was the day of long-awaited answers.
Continuing the tradition of months prior, today's gathering was a private holding of open secrets, shared only among the most inquisitive, or those simply pooling in misplaced luck.

Regardless of the circumstances, each participant’s invitation would remain the same: a single email detailing the reoccurring conference the League holds quarterly. With it came the agenda: overview, then Q&A.

Bathing in rolls of golden rays flooding from the sky above, crowds of people piled down the blocked streets nestled within the city's financial district, everyone eagerly vying for a glimpse of the day's main event. As expected, their intentions are mixed, with some attendees prepared to offer applause, and others readied to delve into even the smallest of mistakes.

There was a sense of purpose in the air today. For today, Slateport was not just a city; it was the epicenter of burning conversation. The outdoor conference venue was an extension of this mundane level of expected formalities, with rows of white picnic seats arranged in a semi-circle facing a grand stage adorned with burnt yellow flags and the emblem of the League. Besides the two sentries overlooking the venue, the stage remained emptied of life. A reflection mirroring what was to come.

A thick crowd never got the best of Desiree, fortunately. However, unlike all the other times she had made appearances in league-affiliated events, she did not question if her presence was warranted or not this time; she saw it as yet another duty, a responsibility that came with placing her chess piece upon the table.[break][break]

It felt natural to her to have questions- everyone did, especially now. Yet, she wished to use her attendance as a means of surveying if the general populous still believed that love existed in the fucked up world.. and more specifically, the region that just so happened to now be her forever home. Her questions would likely not stray from the questions all the others had, so they could wait.[break][break]

They had to wait, as the stage appeared empty as ever. "Bonjour, cute hair," she said to annalise henderson in passing, weaving past the seating the ranger had occupied to a bench a few ticks to the side of them. Though it was an empty bench, she figured it would fill in no time- the conference was already packed, even if she had been led to believe that she was early.[break][break]

Placing her purse beside her, she removed her cellular device only to begin a round of flappy pidgey while she waited for the stage to become occupied. Or, better yet, for the seating around her to fill with those who were fond of making small talk while exhibiting patience.

The pre-summer heat was becoming unbearable. Noel wondered why he was here in the first place, were it not for the email he was sent prior to this conference, he'd have no reason to participate. With tension filling throughout the region however, this might be his best chance to learn more about how the League plans to deal with Rocket, a topic that few seemed eager to speak of.[break][break]

Already had the two factions begun in their territorial disputes, battles across the land where the earth would be plagued by scars over and over again from this almost eternal struggle. Battles that Noel should've been a part of. He itched at the chance to protect his home region, yet the order has yet to come for him to take action. And so he sits idly by in his chair, waiting for this conference to begin.[break][break]

As he looks around out of boredom, he catches Elise Calcifet in his eyes, shame and guilt stabbing deep in his heart over what he had said to her during their time in that Megalopolan prison, and the pain he had caused onto others. Never again would he let that happen, even should his body crumble.[break][break]

“Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh–”

Annalise very easily pulled June along like a kid through a shopping trip, through the thick crowd of people that had zero awareness. Seriously, she saw Annalise dive through and push past at least thirty people before they finally found a place to sit. But while her friend had been nice, June took another approach.

“Move it, comin’ through! Eyes and ears open, people!”

Why did she have to be here anyway? Sure, Annalise had brought it up in a ‘you’re going’ way instead of a ‘would you like to go’ way, but seriously. She was the last person the League wanted here. Her mood didn’t improve when she was forced into the chair, but it let her tired feet finally get a rest.

What did Grigori always tell her, silver linings? The only one she could see is if the League botched this thing too, alongside their numerous failures and fuck-ups. She’d be the first– and loudest– to laugh at whoever did it.

“Come on,” June pulled Annalise into the nearby chair, right after she removed her foot from it. “This is a finders keepers thing– and I can’t hold for you forever.”

And when DESIREE BLOOMS greeted Annalise, June only gave the other girl a small wave and a muttered ‘hello’. When she sat down further away, just out of earshot, the delivery-girl leaned over and jutted a thumb into her direction, “Who’s that?”

Tl;dr

The best thing about not being in the public eye very often is the chance to go unnoticed, among the crowd and among the people she works with. They know she's around, but her proper purpose is never fully revealed. Hiding a killer among one's security detail always has its risks, but she knows she's not the only one. Which makes them all the more lethal, knowing several of them are in attendance today.

Suited up she's made her rounds a final time, taking the time to speak with some of the other guards present. It's more a focal point than a lay of the land she's after; to see who's in the crowd. What to keep an eye on, and who to look out for.

As soon as the conference starts she'll become PENELOPE LIVY 's shadow once more, but under the watchful eye of Gunner Graves and paxton concordas she's allowed herself the luxury to move seperately. An earpiece keeps her available at all times, just in case, but she's satisfied with what she's seen for now.

Keeping to the edges of the room, the redhead's making her way back to the backstage.

PENELOPE LIVY had been right to choose Gunner as her head of security for the State of the Region conference. A detail-oriented, process-driven Type A personality, he planned and executed the best security presence the League government could offer for this kind of event. [break][break]

Local police blocked off the streets and redirected traffic. Armed guards were stationed at each entrance and exit, conducting bag checks while conference staff verified personal IDs and handed out wristbands. HBIC agents in plain clothes wandered through the crowd, sitting where they could quickly intercept potential threats. [break][break]

A couple of agents perched on nearby rooftops with their Pokémon, unseen sentinels of the entire gathering. [break][break]

Dressed in unobtrusive black clothes, Gunner made his way to the main stage, though he did not climb it. He gave Kyrenai Black a brief nod as they passed each other. At the steps leading up to the stage, he scanned the rows of benches, looking for anything amiss. [break][break]

In the first row, directly in front of the podium, his Ditto sat in human form. A cap and long hair shaded its eyes, while a black mask covered the lower half of its face. [break][break]

"Lancer here, checking in," Gunner murmured into the mic attached to his earpiece. "Are we all clear?" [break][break]

The email that was sent to her work email in the Galarian Embassy ensures that the Galarian Ambassador should make an appearance at a conference in Slateport City. Through the beginning summer heat of the month, she wears a short-sleeved white dress shirt and a dark blue vest over it. Along with a dark blue tie at the front of her shirt and dark slacks, she makes her way to take a seat at the stage. With nobody to help her with pushing the chair for her, the Galarian royal princess gracefully takes her seat.[break][break]

Waiting for the conference to begin, she sees a handful of familiar faces including Noel Parker , paxton concordas , and DESIREE BLOOMS , two people that were imprisoned in the Prismatic Penitentiary last month. Truthfully, she had rested for a while after getting back home and the memory of that torture in prison still lingers. The ambassador remembers the disappointment that Noel gives her though there were many who condemn her for trying to kill a Megalopolan and their Pecharunt.[break][break]

“I will be cordial with you in spite of the harshness you gave me last time.” She speaks to the blue-haired young man in composed refinement. “And I understand that concern, it would have made me like my elder cousin, the Prime Minister of Galar.”

It's a near perfect day for the address. Paxton hadn't noticed, having been chained to the League's HQ for meeting after meeting. Coordination on PROJECT SAPPHIRE's restructuring, meeting after meeting with departments for investigation updates, and even a couple of notable reports of citizen opinions swaying or changing. A protest here and there. Things he would synthesize for PENELOPE LIVY later. [break][break]

He'd almost forgotten the time for her conference, meaning to watch it in his office if he had the time to mill and work at the same time. It's while he finished off a quick report delivery to dahlia goode that he's reminded of her event. Their discussion was over early and if he hurried he had enough to get back to his office and TELEPORT over nearby Slateport. [break][break]

Hopper was more than delighted, eager to help him travel. They arrive a block away from the Conference, careful not to show up behind perimeter lines. He follows the flow of the crowd, suit jacket draped over his arm as his Porygon hovered over him like a quest icon. He greets the first guard with ease, pulling out his badge for inspection before asking for entry. It works the first time. And the second time. But by the third time, when he's nearing more closed off areas, the call goes out to their head of security, Gunner Graves . [break][break]

"Officer Concordas is up front, requesting entry through gate 4, section B."

Given clearance, he'd continue forward looking for PENELOPE LIVY . He passes Kyrenai Black , but notes she's not near Penny. "Good to see you." he said quickly as he passed through, heading backstage to steal a moment from his councilwoman before she had her big moment on stage. A conference... An 'invitation' from one of the league council, Penelope Livy... Yuina couldn't fathom what she must have accomplished to be 'invited' to such an affair. She'd never met the council woman before, and certainly wasn't highly involved in the league's more inner workings, the politics of it all...[break]
ollie morales for better or for worse continued to try his best to put her name in good graces, whether she actually deserved it or not, maybe he was a reason she was summoned here? Maybe Melody Miro? Or was it because of her academics work within the city, a fairly prominent figure at the Natural Museum of Natural history?[break][break]
Yuina had only been back in the city for her work for a little bit now, slowly but surely leaving Mauville to venture out again, in spite of her greatest fears. The vision forced upon her, a future she never asked to fulfil... Yuina couldn't escape the paranoia of looking over her shoulder at every turn, wondering not so much if... But when that woman might come for her... So it was that she began to keep Nigma the Unown just that much closer... The symbol that had chosen to stay with her at Naomi Sato's encouragement. She still didn't know why the question mark had taken to her in particular, but surely... Maybe... It would tell her if others of its kind were to encroach upon her?[break][break]
There were... A lot of people gathering, it was clear that this was a very purposeful event. Yuina didn't have to make it far, the financial district was only a couple of blocks away from the museum, so she arrived on the grounds just before the scheduled time.[break]
She wondered, who else was sanctioned to attend? Amber eyes scanning through the throws of people moving through the rows of chairs. She assumed that her 'invitation' meant she needed to be a representative more than an attendee, did that mean there was a section closer to the stage? That was when she began to see familiar faces, Noel Parker, Elise Calcifet, but she visibly relaxed at the sight of ribbons of pink.[break][break]
"Desi, you're here too? I didn't know you would be in the city, we should have had lunch today angel," Yuina offered a smile as she came up through the rows of chairs, ever and always grateful for when Desiree was around.

The words that she shared with annalise henderson weren't some pretty lure to coax a new ally - they were a declaration of war. It was the brand that marked her purpose in melted gold, pressing her forward onto the next obstacle with resilience. It was the first shot firing out against Rocket and their sympathizers. It was the gust of wind propelling her forward, even now, as anxieties gnawed at her spirit.

Her gaze slid to her right, moving past the chittering heads. She could see him - Gunner Graves - shifting through the shadows, more a silhouette than a man. The security detail seemed like an easy enough gig; in Eddie's mind, it was just the sort of task you could expect to be assigned when you were on one of the lowest tiers on the League's totem pole. [break][break]

He wasn't even movin' and groovin' with some of the plainclothes agents in the middle of the crowd. Instead, Eddie was relegated to it's periphery, checking bags quickly and efficiently in case some jackass thought it'd be cute to bring contraband to the conference. And, funny enough, he had already found himself surprised by some of the crap people tried to sneak past him. All the more reason to keep his head down and stay focused, Eddie assured himself, even when he found himself momentarily distracted by the familiar and not-so-familiar guests entering the venue. [break][break]

He spotted Elise Calcifet distantly, and resisted the strong urge to drop what he was doing to go say hello. This was almost doubly so when he noticed Yuina Higashi finding her way over to the pink-haired gym leader who he had learned of during his initial briefing with Gunner Graves. [break][break]

Maybe he could still get the chance to greet them, though, as the crowds bustling through the entrances began to thin in preparation for the conference itself to get underway. Eddie found his attention drifting to those huddled masses inside, curiosity gnawing at him as the final few stragglers made their way to the conference floor proper.

"Yuina!" she responded softly, her phone flipping shut with a gentle flick of the wrist, ".. I would have loved that, I'm sorry I didn't let you know. If I'm being honest, my manager switched up the dates on the calendar.. I flew here as fast as my Dragonair allowed it."[break][break]

That was not a lie; she had rehearsed the questions that she would speak as a representative, mainly for those who had rested on the top of the mountain and in the forests below. Yet, speaking them aloud, and truly getting prepared for an event like this after an event like that was something else entirely. Above all else, though, she wished that her firm-pressed designer pantsuit and wind-kissed waves did not read as disheveled as her mind after the cosmic bondage.[break][break]

And all the adjustments that came with taking on such a hefty responsibility. "Oh, and would you look who it is," she said with a smile, clasping her hands above her heart with whimsy, ".. PENELOPE LIVY, hi! It's been coming together quite quickly up there, where the lava bubbles about."[break][break]

Seeing her in person for the first time, where her gaze had not been distracted, struck curiosity as it did inspiration. There once was a woman who had been retained alongside her in the alien ship, one that had just the same head of hair as her; she wished not to assume, as coincidence was unfaltering in the world of oddities, but the thought led her mind to wonder.[break][break]

"It's an honor to meet the woman behind the invitation, let alone to be here today," she nodded toward Yuina, ".. the flames don't meet the forest often, but when they do, it's an unstoppable force."[break][break]

Save the burning up of all the foliage- if her words would manifest and intertwine their futures as a member of the council and a gym leader. With her words, she smiled blissfully, excited at the thought of making further acquaintance.

Moving carefully not to knock into any of the surrounding chairs or guests, Yuina smiled at Desiree as she came to sit down beside her. She could imagine Desi was impossibly busy, not only was she an angel on stage still but she was also working on getting her very own gym set up.[break]
"Maybe we can have a treat after? I know a couple of places around the museum," Yuina offered, sitting and making herself comfortable to await the start of this whole affair. More and more people yet continued to file into the surrounding spaces, Yuina couldn't help her wandering amber gaze, more vigilant than she was before even though she couldn't imagine what she would have to be on alert for truly... Yuina blinked when she and Desiree were approached, and fortunately Desiree was first to speak, to address the woman that came towards them. To name her as PENELOPE LIVY, the councilwoman that was sanctioning the event.[break][break]

Nobody... Yuina wanted to crawl away into her shadows at that moment as she was perceived by the councilwoman, she didn't have any place here...[break][break]
